I am just starting my research on this, and my cursory searches have yielded a lot of mismatched information.

Anyone got a good link that rips through the BS so I can figure out what to buy for NVG/Thermal night optics for hunting predators?

Would be very helpful to know if anyone has any state laws linked as well.

I still have a couple years in Australia, but it would be good to have an idea on what I can and can't not legally do.

I know in Wyoming your not allowed to spotlight on public land at night. But does that mean you can not use a NV or Thermal?

Muscox, just a heads up that Night Vision and Thermal is all legal in australia, the only thing you'd have difficulty with would be IR lasers. I'm surprised they aren't restrcited given our leftist government and it's opinion on all things firearms related.

NVT sell some decent gear, mainly for Fox/Cat shooting, give them a call and I'm sure they'd happily run you through what there is and what would be best for you:

Also, What part of Oz are you in?

Re: NV or Thermal scope for varmints

Thermal is good for spotting an animal, then use NV to identify/shoot it.

Most spotlight laws refer to *casting rays*. Thermal and NV don't do that.

What is your budget and rifle?

Re: NV or Thermal scope for varmints

I have had the opportunity to use a NV scope a couple times since I have been out. Here in ND it is a NO GO. If you find out you can just get the best one you can afford. I have used lots of Gen1 hand held units and they suck compared to the Gen 3 scope I used.

When I was in I was just happier than hell to be able to see at night without having a light in hand. So I never got to enjoy them like I have been able to since I have been out.

Then look for artificial lighting devices. It said NV is not allowed. Granted that did not say it was not ok for Coyotes. I did see a spot where lights where ok with written permission from the land owner.

I would send them a Email or call them.

Wes, thanks!

Deersniper,

I think I can probably get $3500 out the door before the Wife freaks out.

Ideal situation would be to have soemthing that mounted to an exhisting optic. Does anyone know if they make something that mounts in front of or behind a already mounted rifle and I can take it off?

Remoah,

I only have 2 years left in Australia before I am back in the States. Not 100% sure where yet, as I don't have a job lined up yet. Canberra!

Heck I might be going to Alice Springs to work at Pine Gap if I don't get something else lined up.

RPK,

How is NODAK? I am looking at jobs there when I retire from the MIL in 2 years. INTEL/HAZMAT/Aviation Life Support/Ordnance Management. Probably around your 2 bases.

Re: NV or Thermal scope for varmints

If the rifle is a .223 or less, you can mount a PVS14 behind your existing optic.

Or look at a PVS/4 or D740.

I don't know if you can obtain those optics in AUS.
