for 338 lapua, i like either the 5.5-22 or 8-32. depending on your bullet and how far out you want to go. the 12-42 lacks the adjustment as others have mentioned.

I have the new 5.5-22x50 high speed zero stop on my 338edge. I asked the same question when I was trying to make a glass choice for this rifle. As stated above 100 moa of elevation adjustment, its a no brainer, that is definately the choice! Good luck and good shooting!

5.5-22 as stated above... more internal elevation
I think the 12-42 is great for BR shooters shooting at short ranges well below 1000 yards.

I have an 8-32 NXS and seldom go above 24...but at 300 and 400 I have to go to 32 to read bullet hits. I don't think I would want the 5.5-22 now that I have the 8-32...only if I plan to use it for hunting at close range, 100yd shots. It's just really nice to be able to crank it up to verify bullet placement.

I would highly recommend the 5.5x22 with the 8-32 as the second. I have a 12x42 and 8-32 and 3 5.5x22's Used to think I needed alot of power and now have gone down in mag power. I use the 12x42 on a heavy BR gun and my 8x32 on my light bench gun. For the field. 5.5x22 and under. If your only shooting 1200yds with a .338LM then 8x32 would probably have enough adjustment but even with the extra power I still keep it on 22X to keep it calibrated with the turrets. Can't go wrong with the 22

I have nine 5.5-22 NF and one 12-42 NF BR model.
IMHO, the 5.5-22 will work for about any situation.
It is what I ran on my 338LM.

Say you get 12-42, its great for long distances IF the mirage doesn't make you dial back the mag (In louisiana this can be very important), and if you got the adjustment to even get there in the first place. Get a 40 MOA base if you get it HA. Then on the other hand, if you get the 5.5x22, on full power your turrets and reticle will be matching which is great, if you need to shoot close or quick the lower power is the only way this can happen. You will have the adjustment needed to reach out there. You will still have plenty power for 1200 yds. I've shot 1 mile with mine and it was plenty for that. Like I said earlier, if your on another power other than your calibrated power (22X) on all the FL NF scopes (with the exception of the 3.5x15) and you can call a miss. You have to either guess how far off it was OR holdover with the current power setting. So I find it better to stay on 22 power even on the higher power scopes. It is a no brainer for me to stay with the 5.5x22 version.

And it will be more suited to other rifles better than a 12-42 (unless you get a 1000BR rifle) Less is more really comes into play in scopes at times. Good luck bro.
