Was wanting to know is there any difference in the 5.5x22 and the 8x32 Nightforce NXS as far as durability? I know there is the windage and elevation difference. Just trying to deside which way to go.
THANKS
Bob

I have a 8-32X56 NXS on my TRG 22 and a 5.5-22X50 on my Colt 6721. I haven't seen any difference between the two. If your shoo ting very long distances go with the 8-32. Anything under 1K yards the 5.5-22. That's how I made my decision.

Which way to go depends on what you are going to use it for. Chances are you won't be able to fully use the 8-32, and that if you do it won't be on anything less than a 40 MOA base.

I am by no means an expert on the subject matter but allow me to add my .02 cents.

Regardless of what power you opt for, the Nightforce NXS will be durable regardless. If you're referring to functionality, the 5.5-22x will serve you exceptionally well at the higher magnification for the long range and still has low enough magnification to aid in the short range.

In fact, you'll find there are shooters who use and prefer a fixed power such as a 10x for shots out to 1000yds because a scope up to 15x is adequate for a 1000yd shot.

Re: NXS 5.5x22 vs 8x32

To the point of durability, I don't think you'll ever find quantitative evidence that any of the NXS line is worse/better than any other of the NXS line. I've been wrong, but ...

As to which to get, some things to consider:
1) The 22x w/mil-* reticle is designed for ranging while at 22x. It's easy to remember and get it dialed to the proper setting for ranging that way (though some may prefer scopes that range on a lower magnification). I have it in my head (meaning, I remember it this way, but couldn't confirm via NF website) that the 8x–32x and 12x–42x scopes also range properly while at 22x, making it a bit harder to remember or get set right.
2) 22x vs 32x top end: 32x is a lot, really. If used at highest mag., it'll be harder to hold on target though recoil, amplify mirage more, pass less light, and have narrower field of view. But depending on how you'll be using it, that might all be fine.
3) 5.5x vs 8x low end: Is 8x too much for how you'll be using it?

Hope that helps.

Re: NXS 5.5x22 vs 8x32

Guys thanks for the help my main concern was durability. I've been using a MK4 10x mildot on this rifle. But I'm trying to down size so this rifle will sever as a tactical and target, varmint rifle. My eyes have never been very good and are not getting any better. So I need more power for varmint and target shooting. But do not want to lose durability for tactical use.

Re: NXS 5.5x22 vs 8x32

If long range is the ONLY type shooting, then by all means go with the 8-32X. I have one on my 7mmWSM and it is the best choice for LONG range. The 22X is great also but on those days where it is cloudy, cool re: no mirage, the 32X is great to have. You can always dial back power.

If tactical comps (run and gun) are on your list, you will be better off with a FFP Nightforce

If you're hunting then the 8.5X is too much for when it get's dark, you need more FOV. I use the 2.5 - 10X32 for hunting.

Just my .02, spend it wisely
