I have a few questions regarding Obermeyer barrels:

Are they all 5R rifling? And what is the M24 barrel profile? His website doesn't list the profile, but I've seen M24 profile Obermeyer barrels for sale. A little research turned up dimensions that made it seem as if the M24 and AMU profiles are the exact same.

Thanks for any info you can provide.

Most custom barrel makers contours are about the same. You can check out Brux, Bartlein, Broughton, Krieger, Hart, Shilen, Douglas,Benchmark, Mcgowen,Schnieder,Pacnor,Lilja,RockCreek, etc to compare. Before you buy a OBY, make sure you watch out for the tight bore. Can`t understand why someone would want to squeeze and deform the bullet anymore than necessary.

The only thing I would recommend is to use premium bullets (why wouldnt you anyway?). If the bore is too tight that the rifling cuts all the way through the copper, you could run into accuracy issues. I put over 1500 rounds through my Obermeyer in .284 and never had the slightest problem with AMAX, SMK, Berger or JLK bullets.

Some people claim that they saw increased velocity with the tight bore, but none of my chrono work showed that to be the case. Since I sold that gun I have been dying get one back, so now I am doing my first from the ground up build to get it back. My smith here in Colorado (Dave Sullivan) recommends them highly and I have never seen one build come out of his shop that doesn't shoot bugholes.

There is no reason to have a bore that tight. It squeezes the bullet smaller than needed. Why elongate the bullet?

No offense, but there is/was a reason if Boots is/was making his barrels this way. Many of the top barrels makers have either worked for, with, or alongside Boots at some point in their career. I would suggest the OP try to contact Boots and speak with him about why he chooses to run tighter bores. I do know that Obermeyer barrels are extremely accurate and were hard to get for along time due to government contracts, if that tells you anything.

The M24 is slightly smaller then the AMU. The M24 is the better choice of target barrels. It's thick but not excessively heavy, however you will have just as accurate a barrel with no degration in heat build up with a Medium Palma contour. The Medium Palma will be a good bit lighter and provide a better balanced rifle.

if im not mistaken i think obermeyer rem varmint matches other manufacturers m24. not sure where i read that but it sticks out in my memory...id contact bugholes here on the hide as he sells obermeyer barrels

Thanks for the info. I'll look into a Medium Palma, but so far it seems like the AMU or M24 is what I'll have available if I want to rebuild my 700 sooner rather later. Unless anyone happens to know the whereabouts of a .264 Medium Palma barrel?

I only plan on using this for the range, so I don't think I'll worry about the weight. Besides, my fat ass could use the exercise of hauling around an extra pound. I think I'll go with the M24 from Obermeyer.
