I'm trying the OCW test for the first time. I'm looking for a load for my factory Winchester 70 Super Grade in 30'06. I'm shooting 180 Sierra Game Kings with H4350.

I started with 56.0gr and moved up to a max of 59.1gr. Shot 2 foulers that were damn good at the center of the target, wish I remembered what they were. Then shot the following;

4 @ 56.0gr ~ 2726 fps >
4 @ 56.3gr ~ 2737 fps >
4 @ 56.7gr ~ 2762 fps >
5 @ 57.1gr ~ 2773 fps
5 @ 57.5gr ~ 2805 fps
5 @ 57.9gr ~ 2819 fps
5 @ 58.3gr ~ 2839 fps
4 @ 58.7gr ~ 2860 fps >
4 @ 59.1gr ~ 2880 fps

Wind was from R to L from 1-4mph with gusts up to 7-10mph. Not an ideal day for testing.

It looks like a good node from 56.0 to 56.7, and also 58.7 looks good. I'll load up 56.4 and 58.7 to try again.

Does that look about right? Am I doing it right?

Re: OCW first time 30'06

I would pick what velocity you want, and you have plenty of it.
Now just adjust your seating depth for accuracy.

My 30-06 shoots great with 58 grains of H4350 and 168 grain bullets (Nosler Ballistic Tips)...3.34" COAL and 2,850 fps.

And...58.5 grains of H4350 with 175 grain Hunting VLD's loaded to a COAL of 3.36" (they fit and feed fine, mine is a Win M70 too)...2,775 fps

I didn't do the OCW...I did like the other guy up there said, found the velocity I wanted then tweaked the seating depth.
