Being originally from North Georgia myself, I've been there a few too many times. One wrong turn and 200 feet later... they don't make a Glock magazine large enough to get you back out of there and into civilization!

At least in AL the black belt is a reference to soil quality. Generally, thats where the biggest deer are in the state hahaha which is pretty much my only reason for going to those counties.

But, yeah, it means all sorts of things when referring to the southeast as a whole. Your “taking their jobs” reference” reminded me of this south park clip haha:

A lot of the counties in the “black belt” are considered “tort hells” because of the extremely large verdicts for plaintiffs in lawsuits which is really unfortunate because it tends to deter industry from locating there which would help lift those areas out of poverty.
