Hello guys, I'd like to start by saying that I'm a long time lurker. I've spent the past 4 years soaking up all the knowledge my small mind can handle from reading these forums and searching different subjects.
First, let me tell you what my shooting experience is, my current setup, and what I am looking for in a rifle.
I am currently shooting a Remington 5R (yes I'm another newbie with an off the shelf rifle)
There are about 2k rounds down the tube, it's setup with a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 with nightforce rings and base. I shoot 400 yards often, and my longest stretch was 1228 shooting a 3ft piece of flagstone. I've grown up with guns in my hands... I'm just a typical redneck with to many guns. But, I'm on the market for something bigger and beter as I've recently found a place I can call coyotes and see them coming from at least a mile off. So that's why I'm looking to upgrade into something that will reach out and touch at a bit farther distance. Yes I've learned that with good hand loads you can push such calibers like the 7mm wsm out there etc. Even then I have had a want for a Lapua for a long time, can I justify the cost of the rifle? The ammo? Yes...the poor sheep need someone to dust the yotes' for them don't they? And we all have to have at least one very high power rig in the safe.
So now that you all know who I am and what I'm about.
I am very interested in the TRG 42, BUT the base price of the rifle, plus the brake, bipod, and all the Sako bs that costs twice what normal equipment would has me thinking I'd spend upwards of 4k on the setup. So now I'm thinking I could build a more "custom" rifle for about the same cost, and get it set up how I want it.
Very long story short, if I were to do a custom build, how good of a deal can I get without cutting major corners? I want a turn key rifle that shoots 3/4moa...meaning it may be capable of 1/4, but I am a day in day out 5/8-3/4 kind of shooter. If I'm not drinking coffee and I take my time to actually practice fundamentals.
Who would you have do the build? what action? I really like the mcbros stocks as they fit me well, I'd like to keep it in the 15lb range, and spend no more than 4k on the rifle itself. If need be I'd spend more, but let's start there,
Any input is welcome, and I know these questions have been asked before. I've searched many times and just can't seem to come up with a solid number for the rifle, I am dead set on Nightforce optics, I've had one for 5 years now and it's had a beating and still tracks true and shoots where the mil dots are placed.
I will be reloading my own ammo, so I'm not worried about ammo cost and all that bull.
If anyone has pictures of your build, and details of how it's set up please share.
Thank you for bearing with my long winded question. I'm all ears here and wanting your suggestions. (the good, bad, and ugly) I will take them all into consideration.
Thanks, L
