OK to shoot 190's???

Re: OK to shoot 190's???

An 11 1/4 twist will work fine, especially in Georgia's temps.

10-twist is OK for shorter barrels and 200gr-plus bullets. I have one and have never really needed the extra spin.

Some say that 190's suck in .308, and they can, but I have had good results with 4064.

I run 180 VLD's out of a 12-twist and have never had stability problems, even in the winter.

I have shot 208 AMAX bullet sub MOA with my 1:12" AIAW.

Re: OK to shoot 190's???

The 11 twist will stabilize the 210 Berger and the 208 AMAX. There is no reason to twist faster unless you plan to shoot 220's or 240's.

Highpower shooters used 190's for the 600 yrd line for several decades, and had exceptional groups at that range. Corky Tyson shot a 200-19x w/ 190 class bullets OFF A SLING at 600 yard line, meaning he averaged 1 MOA at 600 yrds from a sling over 20 rds. There is no "sucking" of the 190, just some rifles that are not set up well, or loaded well, or driven well. The bullets will kick some serious @&&.

Re: OK to shoot 190's???

It depends on your barrel length and if you would ever shoot in cold weather. In any case I would not go slower than 1:10.

You are in GA where it is hot and you probably have a long barrel. It would not work so well with a short barrel at 0 degrees F. So it depends on if one is making a warm-weather 1000 yard benchrest rifle or an all-climate short barrel tactical rifle.

rsilvers, Actually, when I was shooting them I was living in TX. Not much of a temperature difference BUT they did performed well for me in temps from 30*-100+. Also, I was only running a 21.75" barrel and was only pushing them 2550FPS

rsilvers, I watched shadow4 do it, and do it well, on many days, distances, winds and temps. Watched him make one of the best shots I've ever witnessed too. Not sure about your background, but shadow4 knows what works and has been there and done it. You might take note of what he has to say.

There is a good read about this topic on German Salazar's Blog. Lots of info regarding the heavyweights at a relatively low velocity. I use them with a 1-10" in 308 and they really shoot well, as do the 185 Scenars. Of course, they don't shoot any better than the 175 SMK's in my rifle either.

Ha! Just noticed you ain't to far up the road either, so our temps and altitude aren't very different.

My $.02....

Re: OK to shoot 190's???

1/11 should be fine for the 190. 1/10 would be better, as bullet stabilization is a combination of twist rate, muzzle velocity, resulting in RPMs. VLD-type bullets (secant ogive) tend to need a faster twist rate than tanget ogive bullets (Sierra, for example). 1/10 would be a safer choice.

What powder and loads are you using? </div></div>

You mean for a 16 inch 308 or a 30 inch 300 WM?

The following are typical velocities I would expect from a 24 inch barrel.

Miller Twist Formula, 0 degrees F, stability factor with 1:11 twist:

190 Sierra - 1.365 long - 2586 fps - 1.42.
208 A-Max - 1.340 long - 2490 fps - 1.62.
210 Berger - 1.459 - 2433 fps - 1.27.

1:10 twist:

190 Sierra - 1.72.
208 A-Max - 1.96.
210 Berger - 1.53.

To me it looks like 1:10 would be best for the 210 Berger, 1:11 for the 208 A-Max, and either one for the 190 Sierra. If you use a silencer, I would err towards faster twist. If your barrel is less than 24 inches, I would err toward faster twist. If you have a 26 inch or longer barrel and no silencer, I would say 1:11 makes more and more sense.

A lot of the twist recommendations for rifles were first suggested back when no one had a barrel under 26 inches.
