This old pre 64 model 70 needs some help and is next on the list for upgrading. As a coyote and mule deer gun the 264 caliber has worked well tho' bullets selection and factory ammo choices are more limited than other calibers.
As a re-barrel is part of the anticipated project is there a better caliber choice for the same job?

.264 = 6.5mm = some of the best bullet selections out there. Where are you getting bullet selection is limited?

There are too numerous to count caliber choices for the two animals you've described. You're going to here a litany of opinions on what is best. All the way from a 243 and up. First ask yourself if you're going to reload than narrow your decision from there.

Re: Old 264 WM?

Mike Guess I'm spoiled looking at more choices in other calibers ). For instance Berger offers a 130 VLD at .552 BC but no 140 VLD which would an even better BC, right?

Bill It's not about the money but the group size, we'll never sell the rifle. My father bought the rifle and gave it to me, I gave it to my son, and now its come back to me. It won't shoot sub MOA like it once did. What would you do?

Re: Old 264 WM?

I would study up on reloading for the .264 Win Mag, and pay particular attention to the concept of the 'bore-rider' bullet, which was a quirk that was nearly unique to the chambering.

Factory ammo was made with a two-diameter bullet which was intended to deal with special throating intended to cope with pressures.

I'm not clear whether such bullets are still available, or whether any current ammo production provides them.

Since this kind of question has come up here on The 'Hide before, I'll asve some typing and post the link.

Re: Old 264 WM?

Greg, Thanks! That is exactly the info I'm looking for. I put 264 into search in as many ways as I could think of and didn't find that thread. The parameters of the search returns know no boundaries in my experience.

Since it will be a while before I can do much beyond my current project it makes sense to do some investigation on loads and bullets. "Bore rider" is a new term to me - back to square uno...

For the price of rebarreling, you could buy an SPS to do the job you need it to do, and do it better.
