Old Remington 700 question

Hey all, so I just got back from my local gun shop and they had an old 700 adl just in on consignment. It's an old 7mm mag with a 45xxx serial number. The odd thing is that it seems to be clip slotted. Is that a standard thing for a magnum length 700? I haven't seen it before.

Any help? Thanks in advance.

Re: Old Remington 700 question

It is the way the 721/722 and early 700's were machined on the rear bridge. Remington quit cutting the rear bridge like that in later 65 or early 66, definetly before SN 2XX,XXX. I beleive a couple of companys made a fixture that fastened to receiver with rear 2 screws and would assist in using stripper clips to load High Power class rifles. I have seen them for the Winchesters but never personally seen one for a Remington. It is not technically clip slotted. Don't know where that bit of misinformation ever came from!

Re: Old Remington 700 question

Well I went ahead and bought the rifle. Mechanically it's at least 85%, but the finish might rate as a %25 if I'm lucky. Esentially there's no finish at all on the barrel, and the action is spotty. I originally thought I'd use the action for a build, but now that I'm looking at it I think I might just keep it original and have someone professionally restore it and keep it to pass on to my kids someday.

So who do you guys think I should go to for a quality restoration? I'm thinking a nice deep rust blue would look good on the old girl.

Re: Old Remington 700 question

The early 700's in 264 and 7mm Mag used stainless barrels, that is why the finish looks as it does. I think even the 300 I can't remember for sure. Stainless can't be blued so a different chemical/process was used that wasn't really good on stainless or chrome moly. Also the first 17 Remingtons had stainless tubes.
