I have a very old remington rifle that was found in my great uncle's closet after he passed away. I would like someone who know's more about remington history to give me an idea of age, and a good source to get it appraised.

Markings are as follows:

U.S. REMINGTON
MODEL 03-A3
Serial # 3829***

Barrel Stamped 1 MP

Has Iron Peep Site.

I will try to take some pics tomorrow if this will help. Rifle looks to have been shot, but not for several years... In very good shape.

Thanks!
Brandon

Re: Old Remington Question

As was stated before you have a Remington 03A3. It was chambered originally in 30/06,and unless rechambered would still be. They were also made by the Smith Corona typewriter company. It was made during WW2 for sure, from 1942 until 1944. WW1 rifles would be a standard 1903 and not the 03A3. The 03A3 was a cheaper to produce version of the 1903 that used lots of stamped parts instead of milled and replaced the barrel mounted rear sight with a receiver mounted peep.

Look closely at the end of your barrel. If it has not been sporterized and cut down it should have RA and a date like 2-43 over a flaming cannon ball. The 1MP stamp you refer to is a inspector stamp usually under the full length stock of an unmolested 03A3 so I am going to assume yours has been sporterized to some degree. Value untouched and correct for the period could be $8-900. Sporterized is about a third of that, even if done well.

I hope this helps you, with pics I could tell you lots more. TJR
