I know this is not long range.
However, I went old school on a buck this morning (10/29/09).
I have been taking my long range rifle as well as a short range rifle with me lately. The idea being that if I do any walking or spot a deer at under 400yds I planned to try my iron sighted 1903 in .30-06.

The rifle was born in the Rock Island Arsenal in 1919. It has proven that age means nothing in accuracy. It can shoot just under an inch at 100yds all day long.
As luck would have it today I spotted a deer from a dirt road. It was well within my criteria for a shooter buck and also a inaugural 1903 buck. I fired one shot and heard the bullet strike. I later lasered the range at 117yds. He piled up at 172yds.
The 165gr Nosler Accubond cut the artery just above the heart and struck one lung. Broke ribs going in and coming out.

Overall I was very happy with the rifle and bullets performance. I think that this will be my setup for walking and shorter range from now on.

Anybody else up for "Old School"?

Dave

Cool Beans ! Reading the hunting rags you would never know that game could be killed using iron sights and 100 year old technology

Thank goodness no-one ever told us when we were kids or all those Elk and Deer we killed with the lowly 30-30 out of Grandpas old lever action might never have died ..... LOL

Re: Old School and Iron Sights

Had considered trying the old, Grandfather left me his Marlin 336cs in 35 Rem. It was fairly well used and was taken care of somewhat. However, it had seen better days.
.
I had even considered selling it back when I was younger and wanting to get newer better rifles. Fortunately I didnt and held onto it. It had very worn bluing and the forearm was cracked where an attempt was made to drill a spot for a front sling swivel. Which actually was there but then removed.
.
Well I decided to keep it and had a smith friend of mine work on it for me.
.
The work was done (Reblued, stock refinished and repaired, recoil pad installed as well as sling swivel/band). I showed the final product to my Dad (It was given to me from his father). He couldn't believe it was the same rifle, he thought it looked like a brand new rifle.
.
Haven't hunted with it yet but still want to at some point. Maybe I'll take it when i finally get on a boar hunt, although...that AP4 wants to go bad.

Re: Old School and Iron Sights

I take a VZ24 in 8mm Mauser with me upon occasion. With those old vnotch irons I can handle beer bottles at 200 with it, so the 150y deer shots that show up in PA are pretty easy with it.

Something particularly satisfying about using that rifle...

Congrats on a very nice buck
