After a long time looking around I have decided on my first build. But I would like to do a old school(look) shooter first. There are so many tatical new age rigs on here it'll make your head spin. I would like a wooden stock 700 action .308 My question is does anyone know who (smith) still works or can make a .25" wooden stock master piece? Does anyone have pics of rigs like this?? Lets see what old school rigs are out there.

Re: old shool rigs

Just find you an old Rem 700 BDL Varmit....you can find them in all sorts of things like 308, 7-08, 260R, 243, 22-250, and 223, and 17R.

Would be ready to go without any work.

Like this? GAP helped me with mine. Unertl 10x, M70 30-06, Bartlein bedded in marinetex, trigger 2.5lb. Worked for Hathcock.

It's a fun rifle to shoot and shoots great! There was a little learning curve on the unertl though. I laid down some 1/2" groups just breaking in the barrel, but I haven't tried to squeeze them down yet. I've tapped steel at 600 yd without any issues.

Now I'm jealous. I've been tempted to pick up a either a Win 54 or Win 70 and have one built myself. What barrel contour did you go with?

Re: old shool rigs

This one was set up under the guidence of the AMU Sniper School. It's a 700 Varment in 223. Impregnated stock so it will take the weather (I set it up for Alaska Weather). It had a Redfield Widefield 6X fixed scope. Using ball, (M193) its capable of head shots up to 300 yards. It was my LE Counter Sniper Rifle. We're both retired now, but it still suits me as a PD gun. Solid, holds a zero well, dosn't care if its cold bore or a mag full later.

It is a Remington 700 VLS in .243 Win that is pillar bedded and I rechanneled the barrel groove, but while away I had GAP cut and crown the 26" barrel down to 22", mount a BO 20 moa base, and set it up with BO rings and reducers. For a scope it's has an old Leup of mine an FXIII 12x40 with .25 moa adjustments for elevation and windage. Still trying to find a round it likes but as of now shooting .75 MOA with factory barrel and 95 gr SSTs. This rifle is a joy to shoot and I really liked getting back to the wooden stocks. Like you, I think all too often in todays shooting world we forget the beauty of old wooden stocks with all the new race guns

Re: old shool rigs

Thank you! Maybe they are a bit heavy or not so modern, or top of the line barrel/action/triggers/bedding, a ding here, a scratch there but they are from the 70's and for a factory gun they are my favorite as far as looks/fun to shoot.
