Gentlemen, I'm starting this thread in hopes of receiving some good feedback. The last issue of "Special Weapons" that I read featured a Semi-auto .338 Lapua rifle made by a company called Only Long Range (OLR). Obviously the individual writing the review had only good things to say, which such a report should be given a little credit considering the writers self proclaimed experience. Now I bring the matter here and hope to get contribution from guys that have shot, or even own this rifle.

Still being a little green behind the ears when it comes to precision shooting, my knowledge is a bit limited. However, there is one issue I'd like some feedback on.
This rifle is a semi-auto, based in the AR platform. I've heard (as it has also been my experience) that the accuracy you see in a semi-auto is nearly half as good (1moa vs 2moa) as a bolt gun in the same caliber. Thoughts?
My goal is to buy a rifle that remains consistently accurate out to 1600m. Will the OLR "Bad News" give me this?
I like the idea of a semi-auto only for the quick follow up shot.
Thought and advice would be most helpful.

It seems like a interesting idea....but I'm not so sure on a semi auto platform that shoots 5 dollar bills.

A semi-auto is plenty capable of good accuracy. You will find plenty of sub MOA gas guns around here. A gas gun is no different then a bolt action when it comes to accuracy. If the rifle is built correctly then it is plenty capable. The question then becomes the shooter. A gas gun it different then a bolt and you have to be more consistent and maintain better form due to the felt recoil being different.

Re: OLR "Bad News" .338 Lapua

I have yet to shoot it. I just got it along with the scope this month. Im waiting for my mono and bipod and then I should be set. I'll probably take it to the range 2nd week in Jan. Christmas day i'll be at the ranch to teach my litle girl to shoot her 1st rifle so i want to make the best of it, if i took the 338 she would never get to crack off any rounds in her 22...lol

I LOVE THE MAGAZINE!!!

I agree. If I could afford it, I'd be all about it. A measly SSgt such as myself could never afford such weaponry..... better start slingin' coke

I was quoted 2600. But heck its a good huning round and cheaper to shoot. </div></div>

Do you know why this rifle won't eat Hornady brass?

Re: OLR "Bad News" .338 Lapua

Im not knocking this rifle at all. I see rifles like golf clube, using the right one for the task at hand. However, perhaps someone could help me understand what role this rifle fills? Im not really tracking the usefullness of semiauto fire at greater than 2 second flight time distances.I would agree that semi's can hang with bolts to a degree. But Im not sure they can keep the pace when the distance significantly exceeds 1000 yards. But I have no semiauto ELR experience to back up that statement so it more of a gut feeling than anything else.

Re: OLR "Bad News" .338 Lapua

the older hornday brass was thiner towards the base and some would expand where the extractor wouldn't pull the case. Hornady fixed the problem and there new stuff works flawless but Noreen just puts the warning out there because im sure the old batch of Hornday 338 lapua ammo is still out there, its not like 338 Lapua if flying off the shelves.

Here is a post i saw about the bad hornday 338 lapua ammo:
