Back in the day, before things were so electronically organized, I used to get bump-checked on every purchase because I shared the same first and last name as an extremely dedicated and equally unsuccessful Philadelphia career criminal. Thankfully, we didn't share the same race, his being decidedly non-Caucasian. Every time, it was, "No, no he isn't. He isn't. I'm telling you, he's standing here in front of me, and no, he isn't. Yes, I'm sure of it. Mm hmm. Thank you. Good-bye. *CLICK*." It got to be a bad joke.

Past security clearances have caused me to get "delayed" on every firearm purchase. I've been meaning to get a pin number from the feds for a few years now, never think about it until its delay time.

I have a cousin with the same first name and middle initial.
My dad had a nephew with the identical name (another cousin of course).

Both of my uncles weren't very creative naming their kids.

Buying guns for my dad was a pain in the ass even though my cousin was almost 35 years younger.

I ran into the problem once but the guy calling it in asked the correct questions.

I wonder how many people are turned down because of stupid stuff like this?

I have a CCW, FFL (C&R), and two different NCIS background checks in the last 6 months. Having a CCW is not a pass. What is a PIN used for?

Perhaps your State's version of a CCW is not up to Federal law standards or you have some additional state law mandating it?
Here in TX, if you have your carry license it is basically a free pass, you simply walk in, fill out the standard ATF paperwork, they write your license number on the form and you pay and walk out. No additional checks or calls required.

It used to be like that here, too, until long about '96 or so, and then they standardized so that the state CCW/LTCF had to meet certain standards, including a range test. We don't have that in PA, and as a result, even with state carry credentials, there's no more simple cash and carry.

ok, tyrone jackson, lol

It would be easy getting busted using my personal information. There is no other person in the country with my name. I'm serious as a ham sandwich at a church picnic.

Don't laugh, but I went on a college campus visit (MAC, in the East) as a teenager, and the football coach ran to Admissions to pump my hand and chat me up. Poor bastard just about pulled a Cosmo Kramer sliding through the entranceway, looking for the black prospect.

Most likely your data does not match to identify who you are in NICS. Yes a mistake somewhere. The information submitted to NICS is the identifiers from the 4473. Name, place of birth, date of birth, height and weight and social if you give it. The info has to match record in the NICS. Then you are matched against any criminal history. If you get flagged, then an examiner will go through their flow chart and either proceed, delay or deny. If incomplete data was submitted then a cancel response we be given. Very important to write legible on the form. The new eNICS solves many of the old issues of paper and handwriting.

Military clearance has nothing to do with a NICS background check, its a criminal history check question 11 on the 4473, that its. Many times someone to include you may have an open court record from somewhere, you could have resolved the matter years ago and the courts forget to forward this to NICS but until the NICS examiner can contact the courts to find out who what and why, you will not ever get a response of approve. Sometimes the examiner can see the court records, the flow chart says approve and you are good to go. This is the majority of delay response, the info submitted to NICS does not match a person (you) or it does match and there is an open question 11 disqualifier somewhere.

And yes by law, the FFL can transfer the firearm to you without a proceed on a delay but many like to wait 10 days or a few more before transferring. If the FFL does not get a response in approximate 10 days, its a solid bet no response will happen.

A PIN is personal identifier number, basically you submit all your info to NICS and they do a background check, then give you a PIN number. When you go for a background check, you submit this number, NICS will review the data you sent against the PIN file. Last I heard FBI/NICS are back logged to around 6 months to issue a PIN.

And no you cannot submit a new background check for the same firearm with the same FFL until the 4473 expires. I get asked this many times.

good luck

Their calling it a three day delay but in all it comes to six days. If the FFL doesn't get a response by the 30th I can pick it up on the 31st. I live in occupied Texas territory known as the State of New Mexico. Basically, a glorified county with a lot of open land. We are just about last place on everything a state is gauged on.

Green chiles or jalapeños? :)

I used to get delayed about every 3rd purchase. The state of Kansas, by the way, one of the most gun friendly states in the country, let's you buy a firearm without a NICS check if you have a CCW.......but that decision is up to the decision of the FFL........so you just have to pick who you buy your toys from.......

It was administrative error on the application. Next time I will take a little more time. I feel bad for the grandfather. He is supposed to review the application first. Now he has to contend with being sent back to Shady Pines. Lives are ruined.
