On this day in history....

that story reminds me of the liquid booster rocket fuel plant that was leveled some where out west . It registered as an earth quake
or the newer one in china that would stink to live near .

Father an Grandfather were going there to work that morning. Had a flat tire an no spare but were close enough to get some blast effect. I was born 4 months later, thank God, for flat tires.
They both hated the Red cross from that day forward as the RC was SELLING coffee an snacks,....

When I lived down in El Lago... right by the water... every few months, there would be some explosion we heard across the bay. Big "Whump" and the windows rattled. It was so frequent, you didn't even notice any more.

But Texas City was a pretty massive/bad thing. If I recall, it is the biggest non-nuclear explosion in history?

That and the Halifax Disaster. Look that one up sometime. Read a good book on it a year ago. There are still giant chunks of ship stuck in the hills around the town. Miles from the epicenter in the harbour.

Large ships full of chemicals are not be trifled with!

Neat story!

Cheers,

Sirhr

Wasn't today but germane to the OP I suppose.
I've heard momma and my uncle's, aunt's, grandaddy, talk many times about the night Catch-me-Eye blew up. I remember grandaddy saying, "It pert nearly knocked us all out of bed. We thought them Germins er Japs dun bumbed us all."
Interesting times.
Hubert didn't fight in the war cause he was a big hog farmer with 10 children. He did help make sure them boys got their spam, and piles of it.
