On your AR, how many clicks on your BDC?

anybody tell me how many 1/2 MOA elevation clicks they count on their detachable AR 6/3 carry handle from bottomed out position to topped out? I've got two rifles and one is 48 clicks topped out and the other 50..thought all would be the same and obviously not.

Anybody have an A2 fixed handle - same question.

What brand(s) do you have? I know they're all supposed to be the same, but they're not...

I've got some Bushmasters accessible I can count for you, but I think you're splitting hairs for no reason. Also, instead of counting from bottom to top, are you getting a different number of clicks between the markings? Sometimes just turn a bit more on the top end than others, and some will go to 6/3-2 and others bottom out at 6/3. If they have a different number of clicks between the markings I would be concerned, but if not then it's a non-issue in my opinion.

It really doesn't make a difference in my experience, so long as the rate of elevation is the same between clicks and the same from marking to marking. It's the front sight post that sets the base line.

roger thanks. agree clicks in between that must be consistant most important. preparing some instructional materials for my guard unit. have only 2 commercial AR's (both RRA) here. Understood on the FSP setting baseline at 300 meter zero -I got 23 1.25 MOA clicks maxed out on that, and on rear windage, I counted 1/2 MOA clicks --44 to the right and 37 to the left of mechnical zero on both weapons.

Tracking...

That is pretty close on the windage L-R, IIRC... It's been a while since I was working the ranges at Parris Island.

Typical for a Colt M16A2 was 40-44 clicks left/right. Some recommend setting mechanical zero to the middle of the clicks, but I (and USMC marksmanship training) prefer to set it to the index stadia line and mark the windage knob and sight box with a paint pen, giving one full revolution 10 clicks and another stadia line.

Any 300yd/m zero in excess of 24 clicks from center was considered "excessive windage" as you would then be prone to running out of windage at the 500yd line if you were running a full value 15mph+ wind. Excessive elevation is typically >10 up/down on the FSP.

I'll grab a couple different rifles in the morning and see if there is a variation on the rear elevation. I have both 6/3 and 8/3 sights here. Let me know if there is anything else.

good info and standing by if you have a chance to check your rifles. picked up several AR's with detachable handles at a gunshop just an hour ago. DPMS, Colt, and Bushmaster max out on BDC elevation at around 32 clicks (1/2 MOA)- my RRA's crank out to 50.

In terms of quality, the Colt was smooth and each click aligned perfectly, the DPMS was the worst and did not correctly line up on a test of clicks at 500 where I consistantly get 14 1/2 MOA clicks with other test rifles. The small details like this are telling about how the rest of your rifle is put together -- quality control varies with manufacturers.

On my RRA -- A4 BDC marked 6/3, 4, 5, 6/3 - for 400, 500 and 600 meters respectively here I get 6 ½ MOA clicks at the 400 meter mark, 14 at the 500 meter mark, and 24 at the 600 meter mark. Is this what you get?

Don't have an A2 fixed handle 8/3 marked BDC, but # of 1 MOA clicks I guess should be 3 at 400, 7 at 500, 12 at 600, and ? at 700, ? at 800 - what do you get?

Re: On your AR, how many clicks on your BDC?

OK, got the info for you.

8/3 Rear Sight (~1moa/click, the shortened M4 sight radius throws it off a bit, just can't remember how much):
Bottom at 8/3-1 (I think this sight is a bit off, most go to -2)
8/3: baseline
4: 3 clicks
5: 4 clicks
6: 5 clicks
7: 6 clicks
8: 7 clicks
Tops out at 8+3 clicks. Total clicks from bottom to top is 29.

6/3 Rear Sight (~1/2moa/click, again, the shortened M4 sight radius throws it off a bit):
Bottoms out at 6/3-1 (Some of ours won't go lower than 6/3)
6/3: Baseline
6/3 "Z": 2 Clicks
4: 6 clicks from 6/3 (4 up from "Z")
5: 8 clicks
6: 11 clicks
Tops out at 6/3+11 clicks, but of course no reference markings for a range. Total clicks from bottom to top is 36.

These click counts are for step to step, not total from bottom.

Both of the rifles I checked are Bushmaster "M4"geries, of BFI or L series S/N's.
