So I used the Hornady One Shot lube for the first time, after I having used the RCBS sticky/messy one for basically forever.
Put 50 223 cases of the tray, sprayed at 45 degrees angle, turned the tray 180 degrees, spayed the other side.
Sprayed the die inside and left dry for a minute or two.
Result, worked, but cases had A LOT of friction when the expander ball worked its way out of the case mouth.
And this with 223 cases, as I can even think what would happen with bigger ones.
Didn't I spray enough? Is there a magic trick to have the lube to sufficiently lubricate the case neck internal w/out overdoing it?

Re: One Shot Case Lube

I have never sprayed the die. I find if I wait until they are very dry it is easier. Two minutes would be too fast for me. I wait until they are no longer 'tacky'. Jeff

Re: One Shot Case Lube

I had the same problem with One shot, I now use the Lyman case slick with good results. I will spray 50 223 cases at a time but I hit it from all 4 sides lightly. When I do bigger cases I only spray 25 cases.

Good luck!

Re: One Shot Case Lube

I sprayed the die because this was my first time, and I simply followed the instructions.
As for the wait time, consider I started resizing after two minutes or so, but by the time I got half way to the tray, it was likely 10 minutes

I probably should have sprayed more, but AFAICS seems pretty tricky to get it correctly.

Re: One Shot Case Lube

One Shot works if you carefully follow the directions, but every other lube I've tried (at least half a dozen) has more lubricity. They also tend to be more forgiving if you wait or miss a case or two with the spray.

When you see a "I Stuck a Case" thread, more often than not, One Shot was the lube.

Re: One Shot Case Lube

I've been using it.

Dump 50 cases in a big ziplock back, spray for a few seconds, tumble in bag, lay out on tray.

Seems to work pretty good. Sometimes I give the bag another shot if they don't seem lubed enough.

With necked cases?
How do you lube the inside of the neck, to avoid the expander ball to stretch the case (or get stuck, even)?

Re: One Shot Case Lube

I use it also. I hit all 4 sides from an angle to make sure the inside of the neck gets sprayed. I wait 10 minutes or so before sizing and have no issues with sticking. Make sure your cases aren't too crowded together or you may be missing spots.

He's probably not using an expander ball. I use the exact same method with the zip lock baggie. Full length size with neck bushings, no expander needed (or wanted).

Excerpt:

"After placing the correct shell holder onto the ram I use a stiff brush to remove any dirt trapped on the surface of the shell holder. Then the Full-Length Redding resizing die goes into the press. This die is adjusted to bump the shoulder exactly .001-.002". I have removed the expander ball on the decapping shaft. Trust me, don't use the expander. In most cases it will just tweak the neck or throw it out of alignment.

Bumping the shoulder .001-.002" is the key to concentricity. If your press is in good shape and you use high-grade dies your end result will be excellent. But, again, get rid of the expander ball. Your brass is fire-formed to your chamber. It is already straight and round--so you don’t want to tweak it with the ball."

Re: One Shot Case Lube

One Shot should be called One Big-Ass Shot. It takes a lot for it to work right. I spray from all 4 sides, and when you think you have enough, give it a little more. I also clean the die first, then give it a spray inside with One Shot. I like One Shot because it wipes off easy without having to tumble. When you spray at the 45 degree angle, there should be enough to get down into the case neck to lube it for the expander ball.

Re: One Shot Case Lube

Here's how I do it. I made this little video for a friend. I fill the bag so that the bottom is covered in brass and then do like the video says. Just didn't want you to think I did one at a time LOL. I can do a few hundred in about 5-10 minutes. I don't lube inside the case necks. Never have.

Re: One Shot Case Lube

Rob01, which caliber are you talking about, and which type of dies?
If I don't lube inside the neck when FL resizing, I get stuck cases.
Did you polish/slim-down the expander ball?

Re: One Shot Case Lube

.223, 6.5 Creedmoor, .308, .243, and 300WM. I usually only use the large expander when the neck are out of round or new and never have any problems doing it like above but normally use the smaller one that barely touches the neck if at all so that it leaves the neck tension from the bushing on the bushing neck dies or even with straight FL dies like I use on the Creedmoor or .223.

Re: One Shot Case Lube

The RCBS dies I have come with a small "expander" which doesn't touch but holds the decapping pin in place and a larger expander.

Re: One Shot Case Lube

Try Royal Case Lube by Sharpshootr (maker of Wipeout), it comes in a spray, works as good, if not better than Imperial. Plus it smells like candy. The only downside of it is that it isn't water soluble.

Re: One Shot Case Lube

I have used it with great results. It sounds like you're just not getting enough into the inside of the neck. I usually use a cap from another spray can and put some into it. Then i dip the mouth of the case into it right before sizing it. I've never had any problems with lack of lube on the expander ball. I then tumble them after sizing to remove any excess lube, and brush out the inside with a bore brush (copper or nylon) afterwords. Or you might want to try to aim into the mouths more when spraying the cases.

It did OK but nothing beats this:

Unless you are doing 400-500 cases at a time

Running .22-250, .243, .260, 300WM, .338LM in that fashion. Similar to Rob01. I don't lube the inside on purpose. I haven't noticed any issue at this point.
RCBS Full Size dies on all.

Re: One Shot Case Lube

I drop 100 308 cases into a ziplock freezer bag, spray in the bag for a count of three, seal, turn bag over and over a few times, spray again for a count of three all over the cases in the bag, turn bag over and over again.
I then set the bag on my bench, open the top and flip top inside out so it stays open. Go in garage, have a cigarette then come in and start sizing.

You guys having problems are probably skipping the "go in the garage and smoke a cigarette" step....

And as I always point out in every "One Shot" thread-it makes a great release agent for bedding rifles (with MarineTex and DevCon, I don't have experience with other bedding compunds).

All the confirmation I'll ever need! About inside neck lube that is! Me neither!

I use the Dillon lube and have had no stuck cases since my very first impatient moment when I did not let the alchohol evaporate. Never had a problem since. Following directions and patience... what a concept!
