i have checked though the two stickied threads in here as well as the search engine and didn't come across much info. im building a long range hunting rig base on a r700 sps in .308. while researching optics, i started to wonder if a. one or two piece tube design really mattered that much to me and my application.

i will never use this gun while backpacking in/out of remote locations to hunt. i do more spot n stalk whitetail/varmints/pigs in the tx hill country. in other words, my life will not exactly depend on this rifle and ill never be more than a mile or two from the truck or house. however, if a two piece design will constantly need re-zeroing if i bump the scope in the deer blind, i will stay away from that.

i know that this probably depends on the quality of scope i choose. im looking to spend around $1k, this is my first high end scope to buy. im choosing between IOR 2.5-10x42 ffp mil/mil (idk if this is one or two piece) and vortex viper pst 4-16x50 ffp mil/mil (i know this is one piece).

Re: one vs two piece tube

Dont know whether the IOR is one or two pieces yet, however the older models where. As for your application, your right it wont matter unless you want a scope that will not be effected by being dropped or banged around a little bit. As careful as you try to be the reality is that it will happen sooner or later. You stumble and fall, a tree limb above you breaks and falls on your rifle(no joke this happened to me), etc.....And do you want a scope that may or may not survive or do you want one that can take the hit? Ultimately its your decision, good luck!

Re: one vs two piece tube

I think it kind of depends on how soon you need it. As far as I know, the Viper PST hasn't been released yet and all I've heard is a tentative release of sometime after the end of December.

If someone can correct me, please do. I'm dying to get my hands on a PST. If it's going to be half the scope that they say it will be, I'll be able to quite dumping all of this money on Nightforce scopes.

Oh, and as a general matter, one piece is usually going to be stonger than a two piece. I actually had a Super Sniper come apart on me, when I inadvertently twisted the bell during installation.

Re: one vs two piece tube

i will email scott @ liberty and see what he says about the IOR's.

if having a one piece tube is just one less thing to worry about, i will probably try to stick with that.

tonyangel- scott @ liberty told me some time late this winter or early on next year. even after they come out, i think i will wait a while to let everyone else get theirs and make sure all problems have been fixed. i dont want to be a guinea pig with my own money. and i dont know if i want to wait that long.

Re: one vs two piece tube

jackh, I'll tell you this. I'm going to jump on the first PST that I can get my hands on. I haven't pre-ordered because everytime I've done that, I wind up on having to pass up opportunities to get it sooner. I don't know if you have any experience with Vortex, but their customer service is top notch. The top of the top of the pile. I'm just going to have faith and get the first one that crosses my path.
