I would like some help on what the procedure is to open up a bolt face with a Sako extractor from .308 to 7mmSAUM.

The Sako extractor is correctly positioned for the .308, How do you then get the correct set up for the new calibre.

I am thinking the Sako extractor has to have a shim or something to hold it out further from the firing pin.

Any info would be gratefully recieved.

Re: Opening up bolt face

You have to reshape the extractor hook be sure you do not change the temper. The hook will need to be deepened as well for the larger case head or the bolt will bind.

Call the factory you may also check to see if that cartridge has ever been offered before and order that extractor. Most manufactures only offer two bolt sizes and bore the face to suite the cartridge.I take email as well.

Re: Opening up bolt face

If it is a after market PTG bolt in a Rem.700 or one of the 700 clones you can get the correct size extractor from Midway or PTG.

Re: Opening up bolt face

I would strongly suggest you consider just buying a PTG bolt that's already setup for mag rather than opening it up. If you want you can try reselling your old bolt here, but the price of their new one piece bolts are such that it's just not worth the effort (and risk you'll destroy the old bolt).
