I made my annual trek to the upper cumberland region of Tennessee for opening weekend of rifle season. For the first time, Junior made the trip and gave deer hunting a try. I rattled up a buck just before 0900 on Sunday. He ran up the valley and came in about 50 yards behind me on a 30 degree incline. As I turned towards the sound of approaching footsteps, he busted me, blew, and ran about 10 yards. He stopped and looked back towards my stand. I eased around the tree and put one into his chest at 60 yards. He arched and ran towards the bottom. He made it up the other side of the valley & all I could think was .. Boy, that's gonna be one hell of a blood trail. I visually tracked him running up the hill and put one more into him. He fell like a sack of hammers, coming to rest 104 yards from me, across the hollow. Junior yelled, "Great shot Dad !!". Great to have him there to witness the excitement. The resulting post mortem exam showed that shot #1 had been low and back of the ideal spot, but was a double lung hit. The 2nd shot was a spinal hit that took out one helluva chunk of his lower back. The rifle was a Rem 700 SPS .300 WSM in a HS Precision 700P stock. The loads were 168 gr SMK over 65 gr of H-414, set at 2.836".

As for Junior... He saw alot of does and slept through the visit from a spike. I think he has alot to learn, but I can't wait to be there to teach him.

Re: Opening Weekend in Tennessee

The ATV runs great, but does look kinda funny. The open area took a while to get used to, not having to hike your leg over the seat works better for my son when he drives. This model has the two seats, so it works great for tandem rides.
