Opinion on YHM smooth forearm

Re: Opinion on YHM smooth forearm

Tried to PM you but you're over your limit...
Mods: If this post is against any Snipers Hide Rules I apologize and please delete it...... But I have access to certain YHM forearms for a fraction of their normal selling price. Get me a model number and I can get you a price. (If I have one)

Re: Opinion on YHM smooth forearm

mjh-
I don't know the YHM, but am doing a Grendel build with the smooth forearm from MI:

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/default.aspx?productNumber=2344114534

It is at the same price point as the YHM, but I liked the fact that the rail placement is user-selected: stick a rail anywhere you see one of those circles. There is a full length rail across the top.

Otherwise, it is a nice forearm - very light, yet stiff (it hardly flexs with me yanking on an attached QD sling). Barrel nut and anti-rotation both seem solid. Easy to install with MI's jam ring wrench and any armorer's wrench.

Re: Opinion on YHM smooth forearm

Can't comment on the YHM but helped a friend build one with the MI smooth tube. Strong and solid at a decent price. I realy like the smooth tube and you can place rails where you need them.

Re: Opinion on YHM smooth forearm

I have one on a rifle, it is simple and lightweight. It doesn't come with any of the detachable rails though, you have to buy them separately. I chose it because I wanted something functionally similar to the pri forearm for less $$$$$.

The barrel in the pic is an 18" 1:7 sabre chrome lined and the scope is a perpetually broken leupie mark AR. With an A2 stock it's a very balanced rifle.

Re: Opinion on YHM smooth forearm

I can't comment on the smooth forearms in particular but I have a YHM railed forearm that is solid and well made. Overall good workmanship. A bit heavier than my DD lite though.

Re: Opinion on YHM smooth forearm

BCP, thats exactly what I am looking for, is that a mid-lenght or rifle lenght rail on your rifle. Its also the reason why I am looking at the YHM rail rather than the PRI one, less than half the price. Thanks for the opinions on the MI rail, looks like a nice alternative.

Re: Opinion on YHM smooth forearm

I have one of the smooth ones with holes pre-drilled for me to thread if I wish to mount something. I think it is a great compromise between no mounting provision, and having to deal with permanently mounted rails. I like the smooth one better than the one I have with permanent rails at 12, 3, 6, 9 o'clock.

It is really easy to deal with the lack of traction on the slick one...mount some skateboard tape where you need the traction. Then you have traction without the additional weight, bulk, and friction of picatinny rails catching every where...or having to cover the rails up.

Re: Opinion on YHM smooth forearm

Guys, thanks for the input, BCP thats exactly what I was thinking off running, the rifle lenght forearm on the 18 inch upper, which gas block are you using, I have an extra JP adjustable and I was wondering if it would fit, thanks to all that replied.

Re: Opinion on YHM smooth forearm

Vltor's low profile gas block would be my recommendation.
Very low barrel stress, and a very tight gas seal with minimum weight.
And it's steel.

I currently am using four YHM modular free float tubes (smooth with predrilled holes).
three on ar15's and one on a ten.
I do like them.
I wish that they mechanically indexed though.
I drill and tap my barrel nuts for two small button head screws at 3 and 9 o-clock positions.
This positively locks the tube to the nut.
Then I don't need any locktite except for just a dab on the jamb nut.
Otherwise they will work loose.
I don't like glue on my aluminum guns.

Re: Opinion on YHM smooth forearm

Not trying to steal your thread but if you dont mind a quick question. Will the YHM rail fit a DPMS LR-308? I have the 24" SS barrel?

I have a two piece YHM quad rail on my RRA Entry Tactical that gets used at work (LEO) and it does great. Never moved and has taken a beating over time. Just a little bit of blue pen/ sharpe marker and all is well again.

Thanks In advance

Re: Opinion on YHM smooth forearm

YHM makes a tube for the .308.
It is a hard item to find, and even they don't advertise it.
Fulton armory is the only company that I'm aware of that sells it.
You could also try calling YHM.

I also have the YHM light weight, four rail, carbine float tube, that comes with the anti-rotation screws, and it works superbly.

Hamilton-
I don't like the idea of locktite on my barrel nut either. Do you use locktite or is the anti-rotation screw and jam ring by themselves enough to keep the handguards from working loose??

Re: Opinion on YHM smooth forearm

Just a tiny bit of blue loctite on the button head screws.
Removal of the tube becomes a non event.
I have three tubes without any loctite at all on the jamb nut.
Occasionally they need retorquing.
With just a tiny amount of blue locktite on the barrel nut threads (where the jamb nut tightens), it will stay put.
Very little is needed.

I really just like knowing that my float tube can't twist.

Thank you very much.
I'm putting together my first upper build right now and this advice is much appreciated.
