Re: Oppinion of E.R. Shaw barrels

If thats all you can afford, its better than factory, escpecially if you trying out a non standardized caliber. I shot one on a 700 chambered to 6.5x284 and I posted a 5" group at 1000 with it, but only once. Lots of 8"-15" groups were the norm, but was that me or the barrel?

It cleaned hard as hell, lots of tooling marks in it, fouled bad. After 1200 some odd rounds, the throat only moved out about .003 from what I started loading ammo to the lands. So dont believe the internet BS about lesser quality steel. None of these barrel makers (popular ones anyways) are smelting steel in their backyards, I would bet there is overlap from company A to company B from where they get their blanks from. (Purely speculation on my part)

There are better choices, but in my experiance, it shot very well, definately a MOA barrel, and most times much much better.

Expect a low end barrel for a low end price, but you might get lucky like I did. I just got my rifle with a Broughton barrel, and I couldnt be happier than I am, a little more money goes a long way in barrel quality. (lapping, rifling method, etc.)

Re: Oppinion of E.R. Shaw barrels

I've heard/read (no first hand experience) that they are hit or miss. Some are great shooters, others hold 1-2 MOA at best. If I were looking for a sporter barrel in a hunting caliber to take large game at less than 200 yds, the price would be quite attractive. If you expect anything more accurate than that, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.

Re: Oppinion of E.R. Shaw barrels

dont do it. You will regret it and no one will buy a used one BELIEVE me they will know why you are selling it. Spend the extra coin and get a shilen match select or something like that. Hell I see Rock barrels going for 300 on here all the time and thats about as good as you can get.

Re: Oppinion of E.R. Shaw barrels

Not familiar with them, but it sounds like a barrel it wouldn't be unreasonable to consider firelapping.

Barrels consist of metal and what folks do to that metal.

Often, the only difference between a bargain barrel and a not-half-bad barrel is completing the lapping process. It's what you didn't pay for, and what you can probably afford to do for yourself.

IMHO, worst case; you end up with what you started with..., an OK hunting barrel.

Re: Oppinion of E.R. Shaw barrels

I had them barrel my Ruger and I'm plenty happy. I didn't have much money to spend on a tactical rifle, so I gave them a shot. I had my rifle barreled with a 26" stainless 3.5 contour 7mm RM and it shoots plenty good for me. I had $315 installed including return shipping on my rifle. 5/8"-3/4" groups using Rem brass and 175 SMK bullets seems to be typical and I'm not sure that I'm capable of any better. Turn around time was about 6 weeks or so.

Re: Oppinion of E.R. Shaw barrels

I have used two....30 cal for an 06 and a 22 for a 220 swift...both hunting rifles in standard contour and plain trim. They both shot well on mauser actions. I will say that the 30 cal was exceptionally accurate..close to 1/2 inch groups in a standard contour and OTC ammo. I also agree that the rifling was rougher than one would expect...lots of tooling marks and a pain to get clean but for the price and what I was using them for...worked great.

Greg,
About 12 years ago you were telling me about JB bore paste for fire lapping Savage factory barrels.

I finally did it last night.
Douglas factory long chambered and factory blued 98 Mauser 260Rem.
In the first 35 shots with moly, it went from 1 moa to 4 moa.
The bluing on the riflings attracted Copper, or so the hope goes.
KG-12 got the Copper out.
JB bore past on jacketed bullets with 7 gr Red Dot got the bluing off the riflings in ~ 5 shots.
I will see if I can get to the range today.

Re: Oppinion of E.R. Shaw barrels

I have caved (publicly) to the currently popular viewpoint that firelapping and break-in are no longer the rage. Privately, I'm rooting for you. Let us know.

Re: Oppinion of E.R. Shaw barrels

That rifle did not foul in 20 shots like it did in the previous 35.
Before Nosler 100 gr Ballistic Tips averaged 1.2"
This time they averaged 0.8"

It still Copper fouled, which I don't normally see with Moly.

Re: Oppinion of E.R. Shaw barrels

I have a few Adams & Benett barrels from Midway.
I hear that many or all of the A&B barrels are made by Shaw.
I tried my first one as a cheap introduction to chambering on my lathe. The second barrel I chambered was a Douglas XX blank.

Of the two, I would say the A&B has a slight accuracy edge over the Douglas, with both being easily capable of sub-MOA accuracy, closer to 3/4 MOA or better. The A&B's both have a better bore finish than the Douglas when viewed with a bore-scope, but for some pits about halfway down the bore in the first A&B.
The A&B blank was half the cost of the Douglas blank.

They are nowhere near as smooth a bore finish as the Pac-Nor's and Shilens I have examined......not even close. While I find they clean easily with my regime, I can only imagine that the better barrels clean much easier.

I never did break-in on any of my current barrels, gave it up some time ago.

They are worth what they cost if you ask me, but then I don't have to pay anyone to fit them. I picked up both A&B's on sale for $69.00 each. That's pretty damn cheap.

Were I paying someone else to install them, I would choose a better barrel from a premium maker.

Re: Oppinion of E.R. Shaw barrels

I got some A&B barrels from Midway the first month they offered them ~2000.

They really suck bad.
Like a file inside.
1/2" out of straight.
Bushings on the threads.

But I know that they got much better later and many people are happy with them.

But like a cat that jumped on a hot stove, I am weary.
