Rifle Scopes optic question-new to this

im about to get a rem 700 vtr 5R and im thinking of running a nikon monarch x 4-16x50 up top. ? is for long distance can i run a 20 MOA base with that scope or not. Max Internal Adjustment is 50MOA. or do i just need a standard base?

You can run a tapered base on any scope provided the base matches your action.

There are many different tapered MOA bases out there for the Remington 700 action.

20MOA will be sufficient for your needs to get you out to 1000 yards.

My suggestion is a 20MOA base. Cheek weld wont change much at all with this base type and If you have any issues it may be with ring height selection.

Just make sure you get rings that allow adequate clearance of the barrel.

My suggestion is to stay away from the VTR.
Do a bit more reasearch. You would be better served with a standard Remmy 5R or even a 700P.

thanks vman, i just didnt know how much adjustment you needed in a scope to run a 20MOA base.

fdkay- most of the reviews i have seen on the model from acu sport with the 5R barrel were good.

without shooting it this is what the computer is spiting out
at 1000 yards
velocity 1192
path -407.27 (inches)
zero adj 38.9 (moa)

As far as your scope selection goes, the Nikon will have very good glass, but 50 MOA is not a whole lot. That is 25 up and 25 down from center, a 20 MOA base will give you 45 up and 5 down from center which is squeezing it a bit. When you get out to 1000, you'll be at the top of the adjustment range, looking through the glass near the edge, usually not conducive to a clear picture.
Just a note, my Falcon Menace is advertised to have 90 MOA, is in the same ball park price wise (about 400 after taxes)and is mil/mil vice mil/moa.
Not saying your choice is bad, Nikon makes a very fine scope with very good glass, but if you truly want to get way out there, you might want to consider a scope with more adjustment.
