I need an optic, base, and rings for a Remington 700 in 300WM. This rifle will be used strictly for hunting and I don't imagine any shots past 4-500 yards with almost all shots being under 2-300.

I'd like something with adjustable magnification up to 10-12x and would like to stay around $600 or less just for the optic. Recommendations?

Re: Optic Recommendation

The two that come to my mind are 3-9 SWFA Super Sniper or a second hand Leupold 4.5-14 40mm PR /mk4. I have seen some very good deals on the Leupold in the for sale section. I picked one up for around $550 and it was a good scope( new they are around $850).

Sightron II Big Sky series. They have 3x12 and 4x16. They will run around $550 - $630. The 4x16 have several different reticle options and I believe all have an adjustable objective. The 3x12 have a couple of reticle options, but only one of them has an AO. Their web site is good and shows all the technical data etc.

Generally speaking, any of the Vortex Viper HS or Viper PST products are going to be among the best values in their respective price range.

Re: Optic Recommendation

At those ranges with that cartridge you are talking about a point blank optic. If you found something with a holdover reticle you probably would never have to touch it after your initial zero. In any case you won't be dialing much, that's good because you can get a lot more glass for your buck.

I would look at some used Zeiss, Swarovski, Kahles, et al off ebay, I think you could pick up one of those older premium scopes for that type of money. There are some great options in Weaver's grandslam, euroslam, and superslam lines as well. The Weavers have glass one or two notches above their price point which makes them a great value in a hunting scope. The euroslam and superslam lines are robust and some are illuminated, but heavy. Weight would be a significant consideration for me. The grandslam line is light and bright, and let you see well enough to shoot for a half hour longer than any Leupold vx III I've seen. You can pick up a used 4.5-14x40 grandslam for 200-250 I have personally purchased them for 150 at pawn shops. All of my hunting buddies who have a tight budget have these on their rifles. Weaver also has their newly redesigned grandslam options. I would look at their new 3-12x42 with side focus and ebx reticle, model number 800624. Bushnell and Zeiss Conquest are probably good options, but I'm not familiar with their products. Vortex is another good choice, but their line is inconsistent from model to model so make sure you research the model you might buy.

I was looking at the Viper PST 2.5-10x44 with teh EBR-1 MOA reticle. Any reason I shouldn't go with this optic?

I have two on hunting rifles, they great for the purpose you want.

Re: Optic Recommendation

ive always had leupold VXIIs on my hunting rifles. 3-9x40 is more than ive needed hunting but if youre also wanting to long range hunt or just screw around at longer ranges they have higher magnifications available. they are fancy with all kinds of bells and whistles but they a a high quality durable scope with a warranty. best all around hunting scope right there. ive taken shots out to 525 with my ruger 7mag with a VXII on it. msrp is 370 but they usually run about 300 for the 3-9x40 model

For a hunting rifle, it'll work out just fine. You can also look at the Viper HS line.
