I recently bought a Ruger American Ranch (.223) for a beater ATV gun, now I need a scope for it. After browsing Sport Optics, Cameraland, CS, Euro Optic, I have thoroughly confused myself with all the freaking options out there! It's awesome that its all there, but damn now I'm over loaded, at first I thought I'd just get a little light weight, low powered optic like a 1-4. After several hours of looking now I don't know what I want! Lol! First world problems.
Anyway despite my bitching and indecision its pretty damn cool how much is out there, and how many new companies building decent products have popped up in the last 10 years. All in all I guess it is a good problem to have.

I put a 1-4 Bushnell on my ar and found it lacking formy old eyes . My sights are now set on the 1-8 Vortex Strike Eagle . The 1x will do up close stuff and the 8x should be good (good for me ) to 200 . If your eyesight doesn't suck like mine you should be able to see quite a bit further . I've read 1x per 100 yards meaning 2x equals 200 3x 300 yds etc . That formula does not work so well for me .
Anyway back to the point , 1-8 is quite sufficient for a 5.56 carbine and at it's price point it looks 'll ike a winner . Not to mention it's a Vorex . If you want mil/mil and first focal plane you're starting around $1500 and with another brand . You should be able to get the Vortex for aroun $460-$485 .

I've shot a lot of deer and critters with 2.5 and 4X Leos. Current deer rig is a 6/250 with a 6x Leo (I like to get close and shoot them in the ear). When I procured an AR a Vortex Crossfire II 1-4x24/30mm tube was mounted. More than adequate for what I consider to be a 200 yard shooter. Very good price from SWFA with a mount.

In the last few years, like many of us, I've ventured down the Vortex/S&B/Whatever variable scope road, yet to this day my favorite L.R. scope is a Leo M8 12x. A fixed scope just plain works without any drama. Because they aren't cool these days, M8 2.5/4/6x scopes can be found at reasonable prices. And they still have the Leo lifetime warranty.

    My .02 cents.

Well, I hadn't really considered the fixed power scopes, I've got a Leupold M8 3X, that has been a good scope. Due to me getting older, and like Alpha eye sight isn't quite as good as it used to be, I tend toward illuminated rets, and 30mm tubes. I'll check out that Vortex (I'm pretty sure I gave it a once over already), as I briefly considered pulling my Sightron S-Tac 1-7 off my 308 AR and putting on the ruger.
