I know this has probably been beat to death but I have recently purchased a 338AX and a TAC 50 BMG. All of my GAP rifle have Leupy M4 on them but the TAC 50 has a NF right now and the 338 has a Bushnell 4200 Tactical Elite on it and I am very impressed with it so far. The 50 BMG has a NF 5-22x50 but it seems I have to be above the scope to get the eye relief right. This is my first NF so I don't have a opinion on it yet. I have been considering the new IOR 40mm tube scope but for the price of it I could buy a used S&B which already has a great track record. I have been fortunate to be able to purchase these rifles and I want to make them the best they can be so I appreciate input.

I would ask that there be no bashing of any scope in this thread but I would like to hear what some one with more experience has to say.

What's wrong with what you have?Sounds like you just need to get the correct ring height. I have 2 of the Bushy Tactical elites and luv 'em.And as far as the NF....you're going to have to spend a hell of a lot more to get better, and that's even debatable. For me, I'd want more mag on the .50 ( I have the 8-32 on mine) but why not just shoot 'em and see what you got?Spending money's easier then thinking....
( my old man used to say that)

Almost everyone recommends the NF for a 50, I had one before I sold the 50. Can someone come over here and kick my butt for selling it

Looks like I will be moving the current night force to the 338AX and purchasing a 8-32x56 for the .50. I really appreciate your input and I do like the Bushnell scope also. My only concern with the NF is the elevation adjustment that may not be exactly what I need for the .50.

8-32x56 Internal Adjustment Range: 65moa elev. 45moa wind.
5.5-25x50 Internal Adjustment Range: 100moa elev. 60moa wind.

the 5.5-25 will get you farther with a 100 yard zero.

Re: Optics for 338AX and TAC 50 BMG

Why do you need all that magnification with the .50? You will need elevation more. Stick with the 5.5-22 for the .50.

Re: Optics for 338AX and TAC 50 BMG

I assumed the magnification would be needed for the range of the 50 but maybe I assumed incorrect. I do need to get the scope a little lower so maybe I just need some new rings and call it good?

8-32x56 Internal Adjustment Range: 65moa elev. 45moa wind.
5.5-25x50 Internal Adjustment Range: 100moa elev. 60moa wind.

That will pretty much make up my mind. I would like to have the elevation over the optics power.

What is the best ring to use on a TAC50? Nightforce, Badger..ect???

Re: Optics for 338AX and TAC 50 BMG

Sounds like a better plan. A new 5.5-22 with lower rings. And don't worry you will have plenty of magnification with the 5.5-22 for the .50. I used a 5.5-22 on a Chey Tac and shot out to 2000 yards with it without a problem and I only had it on 18x.

Did you get the TAC-50 Kit with the 30 MOA rail?
The reason I ask is, I am assuming you have a picatinny rail as to your reference to the Badger Rings. The Badger Ordnance MAX 50 rings are beefy but they only come in heights of 0.823", 1,125", and 1.450"

Badger Ordnance Rings

If your rifle's picatinny rail runs the length of your scope out to where your objective is (the McMillan website rifle pic looks to me like it does), then the 1.125" Badger High rings might not get your scope up high enough to where your objective is not contacting your rail. The Badger Ultra High rings would not work for you because you are trying to mount your scope lower.

Barrett has High rings at 1.3" and are designed for a 50mm objective.

They read "Barrett" across the top if that doesn't bother you and your rifle doesn't reject them. The Barrett rings are very nice and I like the way the Zero Gap mounting works. They are beefy just as the Badger's are and are designed for the Fifty.

I have the Ultra High rings on my Barrett M99 with a 50mm objective. I have them because I may eventually mount a scope with a 56mm. I don't have a drop in the comb like your rifle does so I don't have the problem.

My rail looks like a normal rail but it appears it is 20 or 30 MOA. I will try to figure it out. I will take some picture of the set up and send them to some one to post so you guys can have a better idea what I'm up against. I think I just bought a 5-22x56 NF from another snipers hide member. My wife is not realy happy about the purchase but I explained the NEED to do it.

Her question kind of made me cringe..she asked if the paw bearers (spelling?) at my funeral would be carrying my new rifles? Not sure what that means...but it doesn't sound good!!lol

My wife made me promise after the second Barrett rifle purchase, not to buy buy any more "Barrett" rifles. I didn't promise not to buy a Sako TRG-42 .338 or a Tika T3 Tactical.
But she knows it makes me happy so she is okay with it.
Some men have to chase other women, I fondle my guns so its all good!

Congrats on the second NF, now you can do your .338 justice. Now you just need to figure out which one gets the 56mm objective!

Re: Optics for 338AX and TAC 50 BMG

I missed out on the NF scope by 10 minutes so I am still looking for one. I found a S&B but I can't justify the cost difference. Hopefully I can find one in the near future.
