I am getting ready to go on a hunting trip and want to bring my 308 with. Scope is a NF NXS. I have a starlight case for the rifle. You guys think the scope should be OK? You guys fly like this?

I use a Pelican, but I am sure you will be OK with the Starlite.

One thing to consider. Make sure that your scope is facing the carrying handle when the rifle is in the case. Most of the shock the baggage monkeys inflict will be drops and throws. The bottom of the case will hit first. The bottom of the rifle will take most of the shock. If you put the rifle in the case with the scope towards the hinge then the scope will take the hit. It's a small difference, but it may be difference between a zero shift or not.

MAKE SURE the rifle and optic are insured.

Re: Optics in checked luggage?

It will be fine. I have flown many times with my Starlight case and rifle and scope in it. Follow what Lonewolf said.

Re: Optics in checked luggage?

It'll be fine. Just don't try to take a backup scope in your carry-on. You'll have no less than 5 TSA guys look through it and say "thats badass!" Then it takes a supervisor to finally allow you on the plane.

hmmm..... maybe THIS is what Frank should be doing for the optics torture test

do the smart thing here.....stay UNDER or right at 50lbs total weight on the cased gun...wrap to protect the optics w/ scope cover and or maybe some clothing making sure nothing loose inside the sealed case can shift and slam the glass...

i always take out the majority of the foam to allow some of my extra gear like shooting sticks and ammo and spare socks and other stuff that i might need....pack it so there is little to no shifting while staying in the 50lb limit......which will save you the up-charge for heavy baggage.....

Re: Optics in checked luggage?

I was looking out the window at the guys loading the plane last year, and was horrified to see them chuck my Plano gun case on to the conveyor belt. I bought a Pelican before my next trip and rested a little easier this time.

Re: Optics in checked luggage?

If you are going guided, consider sending it via FEDEX to yourself in care of the guide service. Legal and safer, plus you can get insurance to cover the complete cost. Also, since the airlines have increased their fees for checked baggage, probably cheaper. Good hunting.

Hah! You should have seen how far they got with my Pelican. Those DFW guys sure can chuck a case. I would have been pissed if it wasn't for the Pelican. That case can take a hell of a beating.

that is assuming that the baggage monkey grabs it by the handle and when they do throw it it lands on the hinge and no the handle. not trying to pic any fights but after seeing what those guys do to the plane with luggage i would hate to see the laggage afterwards

Here's some pics of my Starlight after quite a few flights. I will say that the scope's zero has not been off when I get to my locations. That's why you use a very well padded case with minimum cut outs.

Re: Optics in checked luggage?

i know what you mean but i used to work for a 3rd party MRO (did yearly maintenace on air carriers cheaper than they could pay their own people) and i have seen quite a few instance where during loading the bag was either thrown or crushed through the sidewall panels of the baggage compartment with enough force to deform the skin on the outside of the fusalage. the worst one we ended up having o cut a 1 foot square out of the air craft skin. on the inside of the skin cut out you could almost make out the indention of the bag
