I'm planning on buying a Remington 700ss R5 milspec and I'm so confused about what scope to get (I also own a springfield M1A standard that I would also be using it on... and was thinking of also doing a red dot piggy back or side mount with that). I am relatively new to long range shooting but it is something that I really want to get into. The 700ss R5 is capable of 1000+ yd. shooting and so I want a scope that can handle that. My range goes out to 600yds. but I plan on taking it out to the desert occasionally too and trying to set up something further. I will primarily use it at the range but definitely would want it to hold its own in a SHTF/tactical scenario. I have a budget of $1500 or preferably less (who knows maybe i could come up with a little more

) ......

1. I was thinking leupold because it is a solid piece of glass and is not too expensive as far as quality optics go. But the US optics SN3 1.8-10x is badass and just barely in my price range if i get it stock. Any ideas?

2. What magnification should i get? I was thinking for leupold mark 4 LR/T 3.5-10x or 4.5-14x...... im not sure? And I also would worry about a more CQ scenario where 3.5+ magnification could be too much, which is why the USO sn3 1.8-10x is attractive but its so expensive..... and is 10x strong enough for 1000+ yds?

3. What type of reticle should I get? From what I have read it seems like the TMR would be the best bet because you don't have to adjust your scope like you would with a duplex.

4. Is it worth getting an illuminated reticle? especially since I may get a membership to a private gun range (also 600yds) thats open 24/7 and I might use it in low light

I appreciate your guys' help SO SO much!

Re: Optics Questions- Please help!!!

I would reccomend you get the Leupold Mark 4 10X40 M3(mildot reticle). This is a really good set up for this rifle. Go with the Mark 4 rings and mounts and be done with it. You can get custom dials for it from leupold if you choose a different bullet weight than what is supplied with the scope. See alot of them here on the Hide for sale. As far as the close quarters combat part of it I reccomend you get an assault rifle. AK 47 type is pretty cheap and very reliable. Keep the the bolt gun for you long range gun of choice. Cant' chime in on the illuminated reticle-never used one. Hope this helps. Good luck!!!

As for the illuminated reticle, unless you're shooting past sundown or before sunup, you don't need it. However, it is cool and has a bling factor. It would probably help with resale value, should you ever decide to sell your scope.

Nightforce 3.5-15x50 would work and would be inside your price range. If you found one in the for sale section it will be well inside your price range.

This is great advice.

Good advice, or if you want to spend even less then I'd consider a SWFA Super Sniper 3-9 or 10HD before I wasted any money on a leupold. Spend even less money and get a Falcon 4-14. Just depends on which price ballpark you want to play in and how rough you want to be with it.

Re: Optics Questions- Please help!!!

For a cheaper scope the Konus 4-16 is a fantastic buy! The glass reticule holds up to the recoil of my 50bmg which is more than I can say about a leupold M4. Leupold fixed it for me but sending the scope back every 100 rounds sucked!!

Re: Optics Questions- Please help!!!

Nightforce 3.5-15x sounds like it would be an awesome option!! Thanks so much for your guys help. I'm still wondering though what type of reticle to get. I will try and look around to find a gunshop where I can look at some in person but I'm not sure if I will be able to do that. Also, should i get the 3.5-50x F1? or is that unnecessary? the F1 has the Zero Stop technology, and the reticle stays the same size at different magnification settings
