What would be the best optic for a GA Precision M40. I currently run a Savage Model 10 with a Leupold Mark 4 that performs fantastic. However, making the investment in a GA Precision rifle, I want to insure that I have the most rugged a durable SHTF rifle.

Without a doubt... The only SHTF scope you should consider, Counter-Sniper. The end.

Well if its an M40-A5 then the "optimum" optic is the SB 3-12 PMII
but with your 2500 dollar budget, look at a USO or NF F1

If the top end of your budget is $2500 I would keep an eye on the FS section here. You can usually find a used Premier for that price. Either the 3-15 or 5-25 power, might be one in there right now.

a used Nightforce for ~$1600 + ammo to practice a lot so you hit those zombies on the first shot!

This is not the optimum scope by any means. The Marine Corps went to the S&B. I have a USO SN-3 3.8X22 on another rifle and the glass is beautiful. There are a lot of folks here that know a hell of a lot more than I do about optics. For me personally this is what I wanted, but I do have better scopes on other rifles.
