Ordered a DPMS SASS good gun?

Re: Ordered a DPMS SASS good gun?

I own one and I love mine. Only had it for about 2 months. The only drawback (to me) is that I find it really heavy. Definitely a bench/prone gun.

It shoots better than I do at this point in my shooting abilities. I can easily shoot sub-MOA....In fact I've never shot a group over 1 MOA with it. My best is a 7/16" group at 100 yards.

A couple of my shooting buddies, both former military, have shot it and did better than I can (so far). One shot a 3-shot group (I know....SH members hate those) just over 2" at 500 yards with it. I have not been able to duplicate that performances yet on my own. My personal best is a 4" 6-shot group at 500 yards.

All I have ever shot through it was Federal GMM 168 and Hornady Match 168. The guy who shot the group at 500 yards was shooting a hand load with 168 gr bullets of some sort.

I have less than 150 rounds through it, so I'm hoping me and the gun will only get better.

I think you will be pleased with your purchase.

Re: Ordered a DPMS SASS good gun?

I guess it won't make much of a difference now that you've already ordered it but I would have called Scott at Specialized Dynamics as someone mentioned in your other thread. If I have a choice between something that's mass produced, mostly by machines, on an assembly line, or a custom build to my specs by a small shop that takes pride in their work and pays attention to detail, I will always choose the latter; especially considering his rifles only start at $1,000 so you could even add some options and still keep it under budget.

That said, the SASS will serve you well and it will be some time before your skills outgrow it. You're new here so I'll give you some advice: more often than not, we buy/own/build rifles that far surpass our ability to drive it and that includes off the shelf factory rifles. So when you get it, buy as much ammo as you can afford and start shooting the shit out of it.

Also, if you're new to precision shooting (which is what I assume is it's POU) then do your homework on here and pick up a book or two on the fundamentals and make sure you're practicing properly otherwise you're gonna create habits and problems for yourself down the line. If you already know this, then disregard and keep shooting.

Good luck with the SASS. Give us a range report after you get it.

Re: Ordered a DPMS SASS good gun?

This is the first step for me in precision shooting. The DPMS SASS got my attention because of the relatively low price and my past experience with their Oracle in 308 was a pleasant one. The Oracle seemed put together well and finish was decent. I could group well with it at 100yds, but I knew I would have to really upgrade to shoot some real distances. The biggest problem I had with it was the trigger - Absolutely horrible. My plan was to replace the trigger, stock, barrel, handguard.... You get the point. Sold it and ordered a SASS. Now I know that DPMS isn't reguarded as the best, but it will get me into a sport that I really want to try. There seems to be a wealth of info on here which is great. thanks for the replies and I will give a full range report ASAP. Any more input is appreciated.

Re: Ordered a DPMS SASS good gun?

It seems a pretty good value when you consider all the accessories that come with it. I've only heard good things about its accuracy. You didn't waste your money and you'll be able to sell it if/when.

I agree, any thoughts on a scope?

What's your budget for a scope?

I put a Vortex Viper PA 6.5-20x44 on my SASS. It is a SFP scope and moa/mil but the scope itself is pretty good. The knobs are easy to use and the clicks are crisp.
Their Viper PST is FFP and is mil/mil but it costs several hundred more.
I paid right around $400.00

Re: Ordered a DPMS SASS good gun?

Fine rifles, DPMS also is really good when something goes wrong or you need parts. My R-25 had some brass or rock or something get between the extractor and lugs, they sent me another at no charge, no questions. I didn't ask for it for free either, they just did it.

Accuracy from my DPMS 6.5 creed is insane, and the R-25 (from what I understand DPMS makes them) is quite good as well. Both rifles will shot way better than I can.

+1 on the Viper PST, one of my favorite scopes is my 1-4x PST, just get the magnification like Pepperbelly said, these scopes are way under priced for what you get in my opinion.

Re: Ordered a DPMS SASS good gun?

Weaver 3-15 FFP is 720. Little bit more than your budget but they have lots of features and decent reviews. There's also a weaver 3-10 for 300 and the super sniper fixed 10x for 300. Shopping around for a used bushnell 3-12 FFP will run you about 600. It is a good scope too but I think the weaver is better (glass is similar but weaver has a better reticule and eyebox).

Re: Ordered a DPMS SASS good gun?

You will enjoy your SASS and will not regret buying it. My only advice is to ditch the metal 19 round mags that come with it and upgrade to some 20 round PMAGS. From what I understand, there was a bad batch of mags that did not feed well sent out which DPMS will exchange for their updated mags.

As far as a scope, you cant go wrong with the Vortex Viper for Features & Clarity vs. Price as Gildoom mentioned above.

Have fun with the new toy and let us know how it shoots!

Re: Ordered a DPMS SASS good gun?

I would beg to ask the question as to why you would first buy the rifle, and then ask if it was good. Seems like you should have done it the other way around.

DPMS rifles can shoot very accurately. DPMS gets their barrels from several companies, but those companies do a great job with making accurate barrels. That being said, accuracy does not equal quality. More than likely, you'll get a good rifle. DPMS is less than reliable with their QC/QA consistency, though.

Re: Ordered a DPMS SASS good gun?

I have had mine for a couple of months and love it. I agree that it is a little heavy I bought it when a buddy and I entered a shooting competition that was multiple targets at various distances. At the time I was using my bolt gun and we got smoked by the guys with the semi auto's. So now I am ready for next time and I have been deer hunting with it the past few weeks and works great for that also. I am shooting 175 grain bullets and the accuracy is amazing and the kill shots on the deer are devastating coyotes next.

I had a DPMS oracle in 308 and it was a really nice gun. I was just curious what the general concensus was on them. I know they're not the best, as long as it meets the quality of the oracle, which I assumed it will, then i will be happy.
