Gunsmithing OSPREY PISTON ISSUE

Had a friend bring his DPMS AR to the range today to zero. The rifle fired fine with the gas impingment system however he swapped in a free float rail and an Osprey piston. When fired, the empty casing is ejected however it's not cycling the next round. Tried several different mags and even put a colt bolt in the carrier and no change. My only thought is that there's too much gas escaping from the piston. The buffer and spring seem fine also.

Any thoughts?

Have the gas rings been removed from the bolt?

Gas rings were removed and after the rifle failed to cycle, we replaced the bolt with one from a colt that still has the gas rings.... nada

If the case is just barely ejecting it is not making a full cycle. What Stock ,Spring and Buffer are you using. The Osprey's I have installed liked a standard carbine spring and buffer would not run well with an "H" buffer.

Confirming this is New ammo being testes with the Osprey?

The buffer and spring are DMPS w/ collapsable stock with 16" M4 profile barrel. The ammo was new and we shot 55gr. American Eagle Tactical and Federal 62 or 63gr.

Exactly what "problem" were you looking to cure with the re-design of your weapon?

SMK, I didn't ask him why he purchased it. I took him to the range.
