OT Transfering VHS to DVD

Re: OT Transfering VHS to DVD

I don't have a Walgreens near me. I was wondering if I could do it with a laptop and some other gadgets.

You need a decent USB 2.0 capture device. Here is an example: USB 2.0 capture device Newegg.com

Most come with basic software to do what you need, but this device requires a different device driver than what is provided.

You can get better software to capture the data, but it is not required for the casual user.

Re: OT Transfering VHS to DVD

I bought a VCR/DVD recorder from Toshiba D-VRR for about $100 on sale, and used it all summer to transfer some priceless VHS tapes to DVD.

The machine paid for itself immediately and was worth every penny. Transfering was a simple set of instructions, and the DVDs produced were flawless.

The drawback here was that it recorded at a 1x speed, meaning that if you have a 2 hour VHS tape, it will take 2 hours of recording to transfer to DVD.

Great machine that will solve your problem!!

Great start guys. Now another ? I have one of those small tape video recording cameras that were popular in the early 2000's. Can I use the camera on playback, feed it to the USB capture device that Viking described, and into a DVD burner in my computer tower?

Please pardon my technology ignorance.

As long as your camera has at least simple outputs (RCA, svideo) then yes. Many cameras have firewire which allows you to control the camera from the computer making digital capture more enjoyable, but you would need a different type of capture devise.

If you gave the model information of your camera I could give you a much better idea of what would work best.

You will capture the video to your hard drive and then you can edit if wanted and burn a DVD.
