Since moving west to the land of "shoot long range wherever you want in any direction" I have been out of the loop. I need a moderate priced reliable pistol grip tripod for photography, glassing and ranging.

Thanks fella's. Whattaya recommend?

Tres,
Long time no hear, and congratulations at the same time.

Here, we prefer the Manfrotto ball head, I believe it was the 322 model. Put that on whatever tripod you want. But for the ambidextrousness (new word I invented) of it, as well as the tension adjustment range, it is the way to go.

Here it is: Manfrotto 322RC2 Grip Action Ballhead - Supports 11 lbs322RC2

It costs a 'bit', but you'll only do it once in this lifetime. Many here use it, and I know of no complaints from them, or us.

I am about to order one of these to couple with this bipod.

Amazon.com: Manfrotto 190XPROB 3 Section Aluminum Pro Tripod: Camera & Photo

It's a hefty chunk of change but that bipod has some awesome features. They make a carbon fiber model that is around $300 if you want to save on weight.
