I recently helped a friend with a Ruger American build with an outlier barrel. I pulled the stock barrel off and put an Outlier steel 6mm Creedmoor Barrel on. Barrel was headspaced with a go gauge and checked with a no go twice. I then chambered some factory Hornady 87gr V-Max ammo I had for my coyote rifle in it just to check to make sure factory ammo chambered good. Everything seemed fine.
He took the barrel home and put the barreled action in his chassis and tried to chamber factory Hornady 108 ELDX Ammo in the gun. The bolt is extremely hard to close. When you go to open the chamber you have to pull extremely hard on the bolt to open it and you are just waiting to unseat the bullet. The bullet comes out with rifling goove marks almost all the way down to the case neck.
A borescope shows that the rifling seems to starting right after the case neck in the chamber. It seems like there is no throat to the barrel whatsoever.
He tried emailing outlier today. So far they tried to say Hornady had a batch of bad bullets. They say to just run other ammo or different bullets. He sent them pictures, videos. He sent his phone number and asked for them to call him to discuss. They just keep emailing back with different thoughts on why its not the barrel.
I am not a gunsmith but I have installed prefits on a few different rifles. It seems to us that if the reamer is sammi spec that factory ELDX should fit. COAL of the factory ammo is within spec of the load data Hornady shows for reloading that bullet for a 6 Creedmoor.
If anyone has any idea on something we might be missing we would love to hear your ideas. I dont really feel like "run a different ammo" is a valid response. It just seems like the barrel has some kind of chamber issue and not being able to speak with someone in customer service seems to really make the process of dealing with customer service worse.
