P-308 brake to flash suppressor recoil difference?

I've got a 16.5" POF P-308 that is my general purpose rifle. I do some targets with it, some hunting, some mucking around, about to do a tactical league with it(3-gun type stuff with just rifle and pistol against steel plates). When I've taken it hunting or shot it without ear pro it is painfully loud with the 3 chamber muzzle brake.

I have enough good sense to wear ear protection when shooting, but that doesn't jive hunting. I'm wanting to replace the brake with a flash suppressor of some kind to cut down the perceived noise when shooting. My only concern is the difference in recoil when doing the above mentioned league competition, as everybody else is running an AR-15. The recoil of a 308 doesn't bother me, but I'd like to be able to be competetive with time back on target. As it is now I don't notice any difference in recoil between an AR15 and my rifle, just more concussion.

I'm not under any illusion that a 16.5" 308 will ever be on the quiet end of the spectrum, but I think moving to a flash suppressor would keep it from making my ears bleed if I take it hunting. I use it for hogs down here, multiple shots are common.

Question is: Has anybody replaced a brake with a hider on a similar rifle and what was the perceived difference in recoil? I could just take the brake off and go shoot it bare, but then I'd have to order a new crush washer and retime it if I decide to keep it. Trying to see if I'm barking up the right tree before I outlay any money or effort.

I know the easy answer is get a can. I'm working on that, but in the meantime...

It's still gonna be loud as hell. Why not get some electronic hearing protection? It increases your hearing but cancels the gun report, and can be had for $60.

I have the same rifle too. the 16.5 shoots all kinds of flame out the end of the barrel so a flash hider would take care of that but wont help on the recoil of lift. I ended putting a 308 Titan I like the results ans it works better a lot than the factory POF brake. I would just take the time to put on ear plugs before shooting your mark if possible.

This right here. ^^^

No matter what brake or flash hider you put on the end of your barrel, it's still going to be loud enough to permanently damage your hearing with a single shot. Ask me how I know. The only means of remedying this is with a can. Nothing else will make it hearing safe.

I shoot mine with a YHM flash hider that is QD for my suppressor. We cannot hunt suppressed so I shoot it a fair amount with just the flash hider. Honestly I don't remember how it recoiled with the brake but it is easy shooting with my flash hider. As stated....still loud as hell and I wear noise cancelling plugs in the field.

Cool everybody, thanks for the input. Trust paperwork should be done in a week or so, then I'll order an AAC 762SDN. Ordering a Blackout hider for now, maybe it'll help.

Super friendly.

Re: P-308 brake to flash suppressor recoil difference?

Just to follow up, I changed out the 3 chamber POF brake and replaced it with an AAC 51T Blackout hider/mount in anticipation of a can purchase.

The noise and blast difference is night and day, very happy. Recoil and muzzle flip are up from having a brake, but it still is completely manageable, and less than my father's M1A. Completely unscientifically I'd say there is a 25% difference in recoil between the brake and the hider. The tradeoff for me was worth it.

Re: P-308 brake to flash suppressor recoil difference?

I have the AAC Breakouts on most of my LR rifles and really like them. It's not the best brake but I don't need it to bring things down to .22cal recoil. I like the less jump from non-braked especially with prone/bipod shooting. Lots of brakes I've tried funnel the concussion back towards the shooters face to get better recoil absorption, but the Breakout does not do this, which is most important to me.. I really dislike rear blasting brakes. Having only side and top ports keeps this from disturbing the ground and dust also. It's a great lower recoil caliber brake.. a good compromise of all the best things. Just my .02
