I just bought a Smith M&P 15TS which is super sweet but know I need glass. I have the opportunity to pick up a Acog 4x32 ta01nsn for 650$ used in great condition with all the paper work and case. Or should I go with a Leupold patrol 1-4x 579 new. The rifle will be used 90% of the time for shooting hogs and yotes out of the tuck on my ranch. I might take a carbine course in the future so I kinda like the variable of the leupold.

Re: Patrol or Acog?

you made a great choice with the acog. I had a 3x acog on my m4 on my acog, and loved it. I also had one mounted on my saw for a little bit when my m145 went down. I beat the living hell out of my acog and it wouldn't quite. I plan to get an ACR some day and I'm definitely getting a acog for it.

Re: Patrol or Acog?

I hate to be the voice of disention but I hated my TA01NSN. It had terrible eye relief. IMO the TA01 is not that great for the application you describe. Now my 3x Acog, TA33H-G is far better than my TA01 was. I can get down to about 25 yards with no significant drop off in speed and accuracy with the TA33. Eye relief is good.

With a little training, the TA01NSN is a great optic. I carried one for 15 months in Iraq. At first I was very slow and frustrated with it. After some training and familiarization, I grew to love it. There are probably better optics out there for people who will put 100 rounds a year through their rifle, but for someone who plans to do any real training, the TA01NSN is a nice optic.

Re: Patrol or Acog?

Sorry soco, not really tracking how training makes the crappy eye relief and poor illumination of the TA01 any better..... My complaint and that of many is that your eye is damn near humping the occuler! This is less than ideal for any compromised shooting position. Have you tried a TA33 or TA11?

If thats all you have I suppose its better than nothing but I think there are far better options even within the acog line. The TA33's and TA11's are far better than the TA01 IMO.

Re: Patrol or Acog?

Proper eye releif is mandatory with the ACOG, it is a great product that has been around for a while. I have one on my patrol rifle, and I have never looked back. I shoot both eyes open with a handgun and it was natural for me to pick up the use of the ACOG. I did learn something last year at the 2011 Shot Show by talking to the tech from Trijicon. He told me to start closing one eye and use it as a regular scope when I needed to put some quailty work on the target. Well I never knew you could use it that way and then keep both eyes open for close quarters. Only thing you need to know abot the ACOG if you purchase it used is to run the serial number through Trijicon first to make sure it is not a DOD ACOG. They will not overhual or honor the warranty if they were issued to someone in the military and then found their way into the civillian market. You can have them overhauled when you want if it was purchased outside of the DOD. Love mine the damn thing is bullet proof:)1.5 yellow triangle fast and furious when it counts.

Not sure why he would tell you this. I shoot both eyes open even when shooting high mag scopes....For me, I feel that my dominant eye is more relaxed when both eyes are open. YMMV.

I shoot the same way for the same reason but with everyones eyes being different I'm sure some won't be able to do it. I shoot everything with both eyes open, I have no problem focusing my dominant eye with the other one open. It definitely cuts down on fatigue from squeezing the other one shut all the time.

Re: Patrol or Acog?

I guess I should have been more clear, anything past 75yds is not close quarters is hard to do with a 1.5 power. I have mine sighted in so that the tip of the triangle is POI. Closing the non-dominant eye makes things easier for a tighter MOA on target at a further distance. I was asking them if they had done any discussion about producing a 1-4 power ACOG and they stated they had not. So that is where the discussion headed about shooting with one eye closed to be more precise at distance.

Re: Patrol or Acog?

I understand what your saying, I just dont think closing an eye brings any more precision to the table. I dont think Triji would make a 1-4 acog as it would be redundant with their accupoint 1-4 scopes probably. What would truly be an excellent offering is if they would put some of their acog rets in their accupoints! I for the life of me do not understand why they dont as this would be absulutley a killer offering! Id buy one in a second and retire my acog!!!! Ahhhh but that is probably why they dont
