I found a fascination with Oriental and Side blown Bamboo flutes.

I've since made about a dozen of them, the middle one is my favorite- has a deep baratone sound- learning to play taps on it aand Wow does it give ya the shivers..

The bottom flutes are PVC, they cost about $1.50 to make including the paint and they sound great!

Of course I'm still learning to play but they're probably the easiest I've picked up!

Flutes are only ghey if your a dude playin, at least where I grew up(Martial Art practitioners excluded of course). Now if yeh want a nice whistle, go find ye a Tin Whistle to piss of your jack flyin neighbors. The sound of the Tin Whistle kicks ass!

Speaking of Martial Art Practicioners - I made a key "D" bamboo flute for my Sensei over at the Butokukan Dojo.

They are hte perfect gift!!!

I will make one for you if interested, it is not free but will not be crazy either.

Pack a flute when you go camping ....have fun.

A Tin Whistle is a lot tougher to play than a Flute, but both the simple versions are dual octave. It is the transition from low to high octave that makes the instrument sound good whether solo or accompanied by a Bohdrun or a drum. Of course when it's accompanied by electric guitars, fiddles, drums and a good singinv voice, it kicks ass(as in FLogging Mollys, Dropkick Murphy's, Street Dogs, and The Mahones et al ad nauseum)

Scott, those acryliced ones look right nice. We made those in summer camp way back in the day. You know, when every family had a station wagon and a nice house, a guy could walk to school and minorities were in a neighborhood across town where 'proper people' didn't go, and kids went to summer camp.

I think my next instrument aquisition will be a pipe chanter. They sound cool and only have one octave range so playing some songs with them requires a bit of 'second chair' detuning

People who live their lives based upon what other people think will live their lives at the effect of mercurial public opinion. I can feel sympathy for those who do that, but not respect.

Culture is that which we choose to do to live well. If it has no substance it yields an empty life. Music, The Arts, Food, Wine, Beer and Liquor, Tobacco are all parts of that thing we call culture. It used to be that 'culture' was the caviar, toast and champagne of the rich. A while back it seemd that Low Brow working class was what the big money was after and Greaser/Rat Rod culture became the rage of the idle rich. It is music that binds it all though. From the sound of a flute or harp to the thundering of drums or the wail of a guitar it all gives us that small thing that adds to the ability to live well.

Toward teh ghey stuff:

When I first heard about a 'drum circle' my first thought was oh man so freakin gay or hippified. Then one evening I was walking out of class and heard this thundering sound reverbing through teh air. It was like a buttload of drums just pounding away. The sound was cool, it made the blood heat up. Fight? Maybe. Dance? eh, possible... Walked toward the sound and my bike and there it was. about 50 dudes beating the crap out of so many different kinds of bongo or whatever drums. It was primal as hell, and there were both men and women dancing around. The only thing missing was a huge bon fire and lots of booze and brews.
It was to be sure, a cultural sound but it spoke to many. I wonder if they all knew what it meant to a warrior or if any felt the blood heat up, man it sounded cool


A 32" x 1 1/4" Bamboo flute has the deepest sound. When it is played right the sound echo's through the fog and the hills. Like a set of pipes, it too will bring chills to a listening ear

Switch go to YouTube and search for Rusted Root - you wanna hear some good drums, think they have 7 drummers.

Love their music, cajun mixed country-rock style folk..

He has publicly stated some reluctance to dippeth the wick in strange wymmen whilst on tour, but his works have praised the delights of one woman (or perhaps one at a time...) in most eloquent terms for literally decades.

Definitely not ghey.
