Re: Pics Of My .308 Rem700 Scope Came Today!

Congratulations. I'd appreciate it if you would take it to the range and show us how it shoots with factory ammo. I might pick up a tactical soon, I just have to decide how much to sell my SPS Sporter version for.

Re: Pics Of My .308 Rem700 Scope Came Today!

Looking like a great start. May want to check out 8541 tacticals right up onthe aac verson, he has a few good pointers for testing as the stocks tend to flex a bit.
I fixed one of the hogues on a budget build for my wifes step brother with some epoxy, a dremel and some carbon fiber arrow shaft cutoffs from the local bow shop., Took two evenings, and some patience but he has been hunting with it the past 2 years and has seemed to work well for him. Just the stock modification helped his groups with his 270 go from 2-2.5 at 100 to a solid 1 moa with cheap winchester 130 pp ammo. Would post pics of this but I am deployed currently.

I have no way of knowing your body composition, but would suggest a stock pad/ cheek riser as it looks like you may need one to keep proper cheek weld with the stock/ring setup you have.

Also, have you adjusted the trigger yet?? Many articles to show step by step how to's on the 700.

Good luck

Re: Pics Of My .308 Rem700 Scope Came Today!

That’s a good looking rifle. I am thinking of using one of those in 223 for a P-Dog gun. It won’t wear the same stock, but I like the feel and weight of the action, after the 'grit' is taken out.

I am too looking into the Vortex on my next rifle. They seem like good glass at good price point. And the warranty is about as good as it gets!

I have recently replaced an ADL stock with the Hogue. I only chose that stock because I found a take-off locally for $50. I have since cleaned up some of the bad flow over rubber and got the barrel to float more freely. I am next going to try to stiffen the fore end up a hair. I like the carbon arrow idea. That’s a lot of strength with little weight. What type of epoxy did you use? I was thinking of filling in the "waffle cells" with some of that Billy Mays special mighty putty. It too is light and very solid when dried. My rifle shoots well as-is, I am just looking for a bit more consistent groups. (None of the groups are over 1")

Re: Pics Of My .308 Rem700 Scope Came Today!

Planning on taking it out shooting day. I'll put some pics up of how it shoots.

Yeah I plan on adding a Harris Bipod this weekend, Manners/HS Precision stock, bottom metal of some kind, going to have Chad probably put a different barrel on her when I do the stock, he's also going to flute the action and put a bigger knob on for me. Hopefully I'll have some pics this afternoon for ya guys!

Re: Pics Of My .308 Rem700 Scope Came Today!

I used devcon on a similar forend stifening project. Make sure to make a good mechanical lock so the epoxy doesn't break loose. That's why I used a liquid epoxy over a putty type so it would flow well into the cracks and voids. It will help your accuracy tremdously. The rifle looks like a good combo.

Well there still too much shooter error to be proud of my groups at 100 yards but my first 4 shot group at 75 ended up ok with the last two haha. I've got a lot to work on still.

-I'm not reloading YET, but I plan to. Saving all my brass from everything for this winter.

-It's SFP but it's still great glass. Very pleased with it. I just need to improve my shooting now haha. Love target shooting with it though, it's a lot of fun. I cant wait to get a different stock and bottome metal on it.

Re: Pics Of My .308 Rem700 Scope Came Today!

I believe you probably could have gone with medium rings, the scope is a bit high.

cut an old mouse pad in half and tape it to the stock with duct tape.

Get it thick enough so that when you get on the rifle in your natural position, your eye lines up with the scope.

The easiest way to check this is to get on the rifle with your eyes closed, once you have your cheek weld, open your eyes. If you are not looking through the scope, you need to sdjust the thickness of your "cheek rest".

A consistent cheek weld is important to consistent, accurate shooting.

Re: Pics Of My .308 Rem700 Scope Came Today!

Using one on my 700p-.308.

Use tape and shims to locate it where you want it, up, down, forward, back. Then drill your holes at the mid point of the travel slots in the cheek piece. This will give you a good range of adjustment.

I CAN NOT STRESS ENOUGH, BE SURE OF LOCATION BEFORE DRILLING. also large hand knobs, no tools, hollow stock don't over tighten.

Love mine but it took several days and alot of tape and shims between the top of the stock and cheek piece to determine exact eye relief, cheek position, elevation. Things that seemed perfect one day were wrong he next.

Hey I thought everyone from Kansas City had to own a GAP or nothing at all....

Nice stick, Also you need Low Rings, the Highs are too high for a 50obj. Make that switch and get an Eagle stock pack your good to go.

Re: Pics Of My .308 Rem700 Scope Came Today!

I have the same rifle but added a Nikon Monarch 5X20. The first thig I did was get rid of the Hogue overmold. I found a HSP from a 5r take off for $200. It makes a huge difference shooting off a bipod.

Re: Pics Of My .308 Rem700 Scope Came Today!

I recently picked up a Remington 700 SPS Tactical with the bull barrel as well. I read somewhere it's a half moa rifle out the box. Anyone every verified that claim? I don't think i'm a good enough shooter to verify it. :p

Probably not in the factory stock. From my experience with mine it is somewhere around 1-1.5 MOA. A quality stock will decrease that by 50% or so.

Re: Pics Of My .308 Rem700 Scope Came Today!

Get a trigger for it before anything. My SPS Varmint factory trigger that's advertised as factory set at 3lbs was over five and wouldn't adjust even close four, put a Timney in it and 3 shot groups shrank from bests of .75-1 to a best of .25 @ 100yds with 168 A-Max factory loads, in the even worse factory stock the Varmints wear.

Re: Pics Of My .308 Rem700 Scope Came Today!

Yeah the pro mark x, same trigger, from what I've read online some are good, some are junk. Mine was super crisp, but deceptively heavy when I checked it with a scale, a truly lighter pull can do impressive things. Just my thought, a stock's next on my agenda. Good luck with yours, let us know how it goes.
