Yesterday I finally got to shoot my new best friend, the Silencerco Osprey on a Smith & Wesson M&P 9. Did I mention I'm in love?

At an indoor range I fired a mix of 147gr 9mm and some lighter stuff. I was shocked at the difference in in volume between supersonic and subsonic rounds. This thing is ultra quiet with subsonic ammo!

A great side effect of the Osprey on the M&P is that it shuts down the already manageable recoil. Just fun fun fun!

I use the sights the exact same way that I do without the Osprey on it, so there is no need to upgrade sights. I also tested putting an Insite SSL-1 on it (which is close to the size of the TLR-1 and the X-300) and it fit just fine.

Anyone who is considering one, go for it. Grins are guaranteed!

Do you or any friends have any other suppressors you could compare/contrast it to? How are you able to orient it so the suppressor profile is the same as the weapon?

Re: [PICS] Silencerco Osprey on M&P

It is easy to orient it to the pistol body because you can line it up and then lock it down. Then when you take it off and put it back on it is already indexed to the right spot every time.

It is as quiet as an other can I have seen shot, much quieter than some. Maybe someone else here can speak to that a bit more. I am however totally happy with my decision to go this route vs a Ti-Rant which also gets high marks from people.

The Osprey is a really nice suppressor. I've shot many, many rounds through 9mm and .45 ACP versions and personally own a .45 ACP one. Josh (SilencerCo owner) let me have one of the first 9mm and .45 versions to play with and test for months before they were commercially available.

Look in this picture at the bottom of the suppressor. There is a small latch. See it?

Here is a better look.

When closed the latch puts tension against the small teeth that lock into the teeth on the piston housing. So, you install the Osprey by closing the latch then threading it on the host. Get the suppressor tight on the host. Then pop open the latch to disengage the teeth, turn the suppressor into whatever indexed position you want and snap the latch back into place.

Once the piston is indexed you can remove from the host and re-install without having to go through the indexing process again. Well, unless you are putting the suppressor on a different host or taking the piston housing out for cleaning.

This is the piston housing removed from the suppressor body. There is a dis-assembly tool (the small shinny part in the pic ;-) that comes with the suppressor.

I've shot the Ospreys next to just about any other suppressor you can imagine and am quite happy with its performance. It is a wonderful product. There can be a little noticeable first round pop but it isn't bad and does tend to be more host weapon and ammo specific. Again, the FRP isn't too bad.

Hope this helps.

JW congrats!!! I hope to get into the world of supressors soon. I am envious.

That's a video of me shooting a Sig 226 w/an Osprey 45 can on it. I did one on steel, two in the ground to show how quiet it really is (steel can be loud), and at the end I do two quick shots one ground and one steel.

This will give some of you guys an idea of just how quiet this can is.

Nope, not a bit. At this point I've got at least 10K rounds through it on various grip frames. It is a typical .22lr firearm though. By that I mean it does get pretty dirty, especially with the suppressor being used. And if it gets really fouled up it will start to feed jam towards the end of a magazine. It takes several hundred rounds for that to happen though.

That upper HATES certain ammo and loves others. It will shoot CCI and Winchester all day long. Remington stuff is okay. Aguila, forget it. Don't even try. Wolf match is good to go.

Re: [PICS] Silencerco Osprey on M&P

Interesting. Maybe they improved the design since I bought mine, or I just had a lemon.(Mine was bought right as they came out.) After all sorts of tuning mine runs like a top. Got it running next to perfect on federal bulk pack. I built a grip frame specifically for it.

Blading the firing pin, changing the ejector angle and increasing the ramping on the back of the slide were the biggest things I had to do. Besides that, I had to contour the top of the hammer so it didn't drag, change the mainspring to 19lbs, rebend the extractor, bevel the area on the slide around the firing pin because it was peened and trapped the firing pin. Finally I had to re-contour the slide release so it engaged the magazine toggle after the last shot and dimple the slide release while shortening the plunger so it had very little resistance to being pushed upwards. (Otherwise it would have engage the slide catch which caused peening.)

I'm always interested to hear other people's experience with this kit, because mine had so many issues. But I rarely see people with this kit.
