Suppressors Pistol Carry or Storage in Auto

I am considering options for pistol carry in my auto while on business trips through states that honor my CCW permit. I do not really like the idea of using the glove compartment or under the seat. Neither seems very convenient and both are fairly obvious places to keep a firearm. I am thinking about using a fake "organizer" that Dillon sells that can just lie in the passenger seat or on the floor or maybe a seat mounted holster like I've seen marketed for pick-up trucks. Right now my CCW of choice is a Kimber 1911 with either a 4" or 5" barrel.

Does anyone have a suggestion or recommendation for this?

I've never liked the units that just lay on the seat, if for some reason you should get car jacked or someone hits your car to rob you, your gun is now somewhere else than the seat beside you.

If you have a center console I've seen some really nice functioning and cheap setups done by basically mounting a kydex holster like the serpa into the console. I've also seen some pretty slick units done in cars with large door pockets either cloth or molded, most of it is done custom though, usually by the user working something out.

The glove box actually isn't a horrible idea. While it may be a stretch in some cars, if someone comes up to your car or tries to rob you, a lot of people keep valuables in the glove box so you can always say you are getting your wallet etc. for them.

I think there are also some inside ceiling mounting options that would be more out of the view of say someone looking into your car.

Maybe it's just me, but when I'm in the vehicle I have my pistol in my holster, a Galco IWB for my Glock 19. It's still easily accessible, if I have to get out of the vehicle it's still on me, and isn't uncomfortable at all.

If you have the need to leave it in the vehicle like for a meeting, I strongly recommend getting one of the purpose built locking center console boxes or something similar.

Good Advice.

If you do go with a small "gun safe" make sure to secure it to the vehicle with fasteners that aren't easily defeated with pry bars and or 300+ pounds of prison muscle.

My veternarian had the box from Dillon that opens with a short code, because he has small children in the home. Yep, you guessed it; he just set it on his bedside nightstand, unsecured, and some mope broke it and stole the box and all.

Cost him a nice 1911.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to look into some type of holster set-up that would keep it handy but still secure in case of an accident for use on long trips. If I'm leaving the vehicle for any length of time and not taking it with me, it would be locked in the trunk.

Generally, for regular concealed carry, the best idea is probably to keep it on your person while driving. I'm thinking an IWB cross draw or upright sholder rig for that.

I kept my back-up G27 in a Fobus holster that I attached under my dashboard of my Crown Vic for an easy draw from the driver's seat. It was a very easy fabrication, but now Fobus makes a vehicle mounted system.

BUCK,

I would STRONGLY encourage you to keep the firearm ON YOUR PERSON. For quicker access while seated in your vehicle, select a cross-draw or shoulder rig holster.

If you're in a crash, things go ALL OVER anyway!! I investigate crashes for a living, believe me, things you'd think wouldn't move, get scattered like #9 birdshot in a cylinder bore 14" barrel!!!

I would also recommend practice(in your garage) with an UNLOADED firearm how you'd draw the gun from a seated position with clothes you'd typically be wearing, seatbelt on/off, etc.

Just my $.02
