I am planning an 8" sbr build in 300 blk suppressed and subsonic once the pandemonium subsides. I am wondering if the blackout can reliably run a pistol length piston. Is there not enough gas pressure? If lwrc couldn't figure it out then probably no one can!! I haven't seen any piston for 300 kits or piston driven 300 blackouts so I am just wondering if they exist. Thanks.

The qusstion, as with all piston AR's, is "why?" It is a solution looking for a problem to fix. In my opinion, a piston gun built from the ground up as a piston gun is fantastic, but taking a platform that was designed from the ground up as a DI system and then shoehorning in a piston because of some perceived problem looking to be fixed...

I did it with a adams arms kit and a 10" barrel. It wouldn't cycle 220gr subs reliably... It might work with 240gr bullets because of the extra pressure but idk...

Do you wish to use a suppressor with this upper? If 'yes', then a piston is not for you. Sure, the piston will run cleaner, especially with the can on it, as compared with DI. But to the shooter's ear, that piston gun will not be hearing safe with the suppressor on it, while the DI gun most likely will. With piston guns, gas is vented at the gas block to actuate the piston. This high pressure gas vent is not suppressed in any way - the gas gets vented before the suppressor. But with DI, the gas gets vented out the right side of the bolt carrier - and away from the shooter's ears.

When shooting suppressed, DI guns sound quieter than piston guns - to the shooter. They just do.

Based on my rifle it is hearing safe and just mildly louder.
