I am wanting to build a spider for my steady rest, and I am wondering if anyone else has done this already or know any any tips/tricks to making one with the minimal run-out?

i have seen one somewhere but i don't remember where or if i saved pictures of it. it basically used a big bearing resting inside of a steady rest type of bracket and it had a spider pressed into it. i like the idea but i remember questioning how good of bearing was used. i think the idea has potential.

i found some pictures i have saved. i really wish i knew who to give credit for these pictures. i got them off the net somewhere but honestly don't remember where or who posted them.

This looks good for sure and definitely has potential, a four jaw chuck would really need to be administered though along with copper or aluminium bushings in order to make it work fully. Nice idea whoever came up with it. I personally think its very hard to beat the through the head setup that most use.

Re: Plans or pictures - Spider for a Steady Rest?

not all things are ideal through the headstock due to length concerns. This is why I am exploring the idea. I think it would be better to use a set of two taper bearings similar to the actual spindle on the lathe itself. Still thinking about how to deal with the steady rest piece of the puzzle, though that picture looks pretty rigid, and it is likely pretty close alignment wise.

Re: Plans or pictures - Spider for a Steady Rest?

I have made a couple of them.
One for a lathe and one for my toolgrinding machine.
Both are made complete with the stand and not just the spider.
The one for the lathe are including roller bearing, and the one for the grinding machine is without roller bearings.

Here is a BRNO action who gets the locking lugs trued.
