Re: Please help me ID a gun

I pulled the action and barrel out of the stock, the only markings i can find are Wards Western Field on the action, and on the barrel next to the rear sight, it says 22 short long or long rifle, and on the barrel next to the action it has a circle with 18 inside of the circle

I just got an Anzchutz 64 MPR stainless steel barreled rifle that is only labeled anschutz. Doesnt say "64 MPR" anywhere on the rifle!...

Got a picture of the mag by it self?
Big retailers had rifles made buy big firearms manafactures under contract.
Somebody out there has the same action and mag possibly in a diffrent stock.
I cannot say for sure what it is, but think a mossberg in that big stock would have a more elaborate rear sight.
If I was inclined to dig through some books and looks at pictures of old rifles I would look up Rem mod 37 first.

Just pulled my Model 4 out of the safe and I'm dead certain now that you have a model 4
Triggerguard, cocking piece, and mag well cover are identical. Also mine also has the circled 18 stamped on the barrel just in front of the receiver.

Western Field Firearms

Western Field Firearms is the Montgomery Ward store brand of rifles, pistols or shotguns manufactured by Savage Firearms, Steven Arms, Mossberg & Sons or Remington Firearms. The original manufacturer depends on the model and date it was produced.

looks like it probably was just like the ol' Sears rifle, made by savage, marlin, winchester, mossberg.

i didn't dedicate too much time to it, but it looks as if Montgomery Ward had a general term "wards western field" that covered bolt and semi rimfires and shotguns, then they toissed a model number along with it.

unlike the the Sear's generic rifles, Ward's changed the model numbers every year, leaving a TON of model numbers to search, year by year.

that model 4 looks close, also search model 21, 42, and others

some pictures and model #'s here:
http://home.epix.net/~damguy/gallery.htm scroll down and see what matches the best. that unique stock and striker are great clues.

came across this link http://www.hoosiergunworks.com/catalog/cross_reference.html
scroll down to wards, search the models, then cross reference it to the actual manufacturer.

unfortunately, most of these "bulk" guns were generic. many shot pretty darn well, but hardly kept any real value as they were basically "throw aways" as americans gained more wealth and were able to buy them quite easily, and the supply was quite considerable. but ya never know....

another thing is that because so many manufacturers had input into making so many rifles, the stock may have been made by "X", the action by "Y". that magazine has a bit of savage / marlinish taste to it too.
