Hey everyone and forgive me for continuing my internal battle I am waging with myself. I am still looking for the perfect .300 win mag, but I need to make a choice soon, as I will be back from Afghanistan in about 6 months and would like to get the ball rolling on my gun. I wanted to get the Rem 700 XCR tactical and put a thumbhole stock on it and a brake, then top it with a good piece of glass such as a used Nightforce 5.5 X 22 X 56. I know that I would be happy with this gun, but after replacing the stock, installing a Badger FTE brake, rings, mounts and such, I am really pushing it too close to afford a Nightforce. Now, I found the Browning A Bolt Eclipse, and it already has most of the features I want, such as the lamintated thumbhole stock, bull barrel, etc, but it's not fluted, and has a BOSS, but that is not the EXACT brake I want. However, it comes at a much smaller price, and I don't have to have someone do a lot of work to it, which is also expensive. If I get the Browning, then I know I can afford the Nightforce (used). What should I do? How do they compare? What do I need to know? Who has a better .300 for sale? I have been researching this for about six months, and have still not made a decision, and I am ready to buy. Please help me on my first true long range gun. Thanks a lot experts.

Re: Please help me with gun selection.....please....!

I personally dont think you will be happy with a Browning, if it's a cost issue, look for a second hand scope, there are tones of NF here for sale. Brownings are not as easy to update as Remingtons are, not a lot of aftermarket goodies. Just my two pennies. Oh ya, thank you for your service!

Re: Please help me with gun selection.....please....!

while i agree with Alaskanman that the Remington is much easier to mod up with many more options i like the browning a bolt (out of box) action better than the 700. manly because i like the shorter through that the three lug system offers.

If you're looking to buy your "perfect .300 win mag" and you go any route OTHER than having a custom made rifle made from scratch, you will have buyer's remorse from the first day you go to the range. You're rifle won't be "perfect" or even close to being "just right" and you'll kick yourself for not buying smarter the first time. You're in A-stan and want to come home in 6 months to that orgasm of shooting pleasure? Contact GA Precision now (as in NOW!) and get the ball rolling on your stick.

You're better off starting with a custom action, like a Defiance Action, and custom barrel, like a Krieger barrel, than trying to true a Rem 700 action or make a factory barrel shoot. Build your rifle from the ground up and you'll be much more saticfied satisfied in the long run. Plus, if or when you feel the need to sell your stick, a GA Precision rifle will retain a hell of a lot more value than any off-the-shelf rifle.

Custom rifles cost bucket loads of money, but they retain that element of being "perfect" much longer.

BUT, if you're like the rest of US that can't really afford such a custom rifle, and most people can't, I'd recommend you lower your expectations to a more manageable level. Drop your expectations down to "it's affordable" and "it's nothing special, but I still have a lot of dough for ammo and range time". Honestly, these are the types of rifles that most people enjoy.

I've gone from shooting very expensive custom rifle builds topped with +$3,000 rifle scopes to shooting a $750 rifle with a $800 scope. It's accurate, sub-MOA and I can afford to shoot every day without breaking the bank. And going to the range / wilderness and shooting is what this hobby/sport is all about. my ¢2

Good luck either way and come home safe!

Re: Please help me with gun selection.....please....!

Hey brother, thanks for the advice, but I truly believe that I can find the perfect long gun without having a custom. I am very easy to please, and do not expect to have a cadillac. However, I will check out their customs, and see what I can do. Have a great day and thanks to all who lend their advice.

Re: Please help me with gun selection.....please....!

I have to agree with Ranger1183 on this one. I went from buying Remington 700's and then after paying lots of money customizing them up what I found out was it is better to buy a custom and be happy from the beginning. I am in kind of your same boat as deployments go. I decided before I left to have Mike Bush at Under Ground Skunkworks make me his Perseus model in left hand with a Defiance action. It will be done about the time I get back in early June. I ordered it in late Dec 10.

Re: Please help me with gun selection.....please....!

Also, people are saying that it costs so much money when you keep adding and adding, but I would not really want to add at all. As long as I have a heavy fluted matte barrel, (which is at least 26") laminated wood thumbhole stock, brake and a nice second hand Nightforce, I would be satisfied.
I looked at GA Precision, and that is just too much money for me right now. Thanks for the advice though. People on this site are usually always eager to give advice to newbies, as long as they have used the dang search feature before asking a bunch of questions...I found that out the hard way.

Re: Please help me with gun selection.....please....!

most people know that savage is my choice... and the custom shop will put together any parts they have, for a VERY good price... they'll do full custom builds w/ after market parts too, but if you use factory parts to put together what you want, it's pretty cheap...

and you seem to basicaaly want a 110 BA in a laminant stock

Re: Please help me with gun selection.....please....!

Well, I just looked at the 110 BA, and I like what I see, with the exception of the picatinny on the sides. Do they sell barreled actions only? Does it always come with the picatinny sides, etc? I am going to do my research on it now, but was looking for a quick fix with your expertise. Thanks again.

Exactly what he said, saved me a bunch of typing

Re: Please help me with gun selection.....please....!

Ok, so when you say that they will do the barreled action, in another stock, for a smaller pricetag, you do mean that they will take the same gun with brake and all, take off the rails, and just put it into a cheap stock that I can take off and replace with what I want? Also, do you know of any stock makers that will make the Laminate thumbhole varmint stock for that gun?

Re: Please help me with gun selection.....please....!

Sometimes you have to settle for something that isn't exactly what you want. For example, if your at a restaurant with a friend and they don't have what you want. However, when purchasing firearms it is very important to get exactly what you are looking for. Your are paying thousands of dollars for this piece of equipment. It is foolish to cut corners to save a few hundred. Avoid buyers remorse and just get what you want.
P.S. stay safe over there man and god bless.

If that is way too expensive, do not go the custom route. It is even more expensive. The 42s can be found from Euro Optics for around 2700. Again, if that is way too expensive you are best sticking with remington or savage.

Re: Please help me with gun selection.....please....!

Well, I went to the Savage Arms website, and could not find the custom shop at all. Finally found it on the web under their list of contacts, but they will not accept emails from anyone. They only have a long distance contact number, which, according to some, is never answered, so I am not about to try to call from Afghanistan. I wish I could ask them some questions about their custom shop, but I don't guess they need my business enough to answer emails. Please tell me if there is any other way to get the Custom Shop.

Re: Please help me with gun selection.....please....!

Hey 10thMTNFSO, if you are active duty military you would be very wise to jump on the HDMR H58 Military Promotion while you can. You can buy these for about 50% of what us former military guys can.

http://www.horusvision.com/hdmrh58.php

These scopes are being warrented by Bushnell who is now making a very good name for themselves in the tactical optics market. Read the comments about the quality of glass. It's very impressive.

Your pick of a NightForce 5.5-22x56 is a solid selection. But you'll save some serious cash if buy a 3.5-21x50mm HDMR instead. Yes, if I was in your position I would do this.

Re: Please help me with gun selection.....please....!

I'm with Ranger. Get the rifle the way you want it. The optics can be slightly downgraded, (Vortex, Luepy, Nikon), and you can work on the Nightforce later, while still shooting to your potential with something lthat fits you.

Re: Please help me with gun selection.....please....!

Hey 10th Mountain-
First off, Climb to Glory! Keep taking the fight to the enemy and treating them rough over there - you guys are doing one helluva job and everyone back here is proud of the effort you guys are pulling. The 10th has had it especially tough with all the tours and we appreciate it a lot.

On your precision rifle buy, I say buy the Rem 700 and shoot the hell out of it. If its your first precision rifle, you will be learning a lot and the Rem 700 is a darn good action. Burn up the barrel with good ammo and as you are, look for a good custom smith in the Fort Drum area who can rebarrel it with a nice tube and possibly true the Rem 700. Add the fancy stock at that point as well.

Buy the best optic you can afford, as that piece of equipment will last you a life time, long after you have burned up many custom barrels. On the optic, make sure SFP is what you want before buying the NF. FFP is really nice if you are using the reticle for holds or anything else across all magnification ranges. IOR is making a nice FFP scope (3-18x) which does not break the bank and is a very nice piece.

Bravo Zulu, Charlie Mike.

Re: Please help me with gun selection.....please....!

James makes alot of sense.

No offense 10 but you sound strong on desire and light on experience. I'll bet you will change your mind about what your 'ultimate' rifle after a year of serious shooting.

Get the factory rifle and the high end scope. Beleive me you will have the scope long after the rifle is gone if you stay with serious marksmanship.

You can upgrade the factory rifle with experience and knowledge. (tends to be a tad more effective than just walking in a place and announcing money is no object I want the best.)

Well at least in shady lady houses it does. Pretty sure it does with rifles too.

Good Luck

Fiz "O"

Get yourself a Remmy 700 P in 300 WM. For the money they are well worth it. They come with the HS stock, old school Remmy trigger (not a pos x-mark), 1-10 twist 26" barrel, and some other shit.

I got one and slapped a cheap ass weaver brand extended picatinny tactical scope mount, Burris xtreme tactical rings, and a 6.5x20x50 VX3 Leupold. Oh yeah I skim bedded the action. Took it to the range for the first time shot it and it laid in a 3 shot group at 200 yds measuring 7/8" . Drew it in to 100 yrds shot a 5 round group at roughly the same 7/8".

Since your over in Trashagistan due me a favor, make it rain down steel on them taliban son a bitches.

Re: Please help me with gun selection.....please....!

why not get a basic remington 700 LA. or a 300WA

then get urself the stock and all the other stuff.

who cares what model 700 you get? you're changing almost everything on it!

and then in a month you can get yourself a barrel and install it

I got a used .30-06 for 300 bucks. everything is leaving the rifle except the action/bolt, which is actually getting trued.

it'll cost me alot less then you think

Re: Please help me with gun selection.....please....!

For all those folks that insist that the Remington action is a turd not worth polishing, please tell the folks at Tac-Ops. That way they can quit polishing useless turds.

To the OP, I do agree with most of the posters that either a full custom or semi-custom rig is what you really want. The biggest problem that I see is that you want "a thumbhole stock".
WHICH thumbhole stock? have you tried this stock before, have you gotten behind a rifle with this stock on it to see if it is really what you want.

I am NOT trying to talk you out of an AICS, or KMW Sentinel, but these are substantial investments and if you don't like the way it fits or are uncomfortable with the hand position or whatever, then you are going to have to sell it. Some of these stocks are real love it or hate it designs, I would hate to see you drop the money on the stock and then not be happy.

If you are trying to keep the price within reason I suggest the following:
Remington 5R Mil-Spec 1000
Local gunsmith install brake of your choice 125
Good set of rings and base 200 - 250
Add your scope

You will get a very capable rifle that is in a good stock that you will be able to shoot right away.

take your time. Do some research, get behind the stock that you are thinking of buying to see if it fits, order the stock you want, sell you takeoff stock for 200 bucks to defray the cost.

When you shoot out the barrel, have action blueprinted and install match barrel of your choice.

By the way all the basic remmies including the 700P and 5R come with the x mark pro trigger. It is not a bad trigger.

The perfect 300Mag is a 7mmRemmag if forced to suffer a belt.

A-Borts are dogshit, from stem to stern. Forget the Hubble X's notion, along with the brake.

Less is more.
