Hiya Guys,

I have just purchased a Tikka T3 Tactical in .223 and am unsure what bullets to try first for long range accuracy. I want to use the rifle out to 6-800yds.

The barrel is 23.75" with a 1 in 8 twist.

Will this barrel stabilize a 75 grain amax and the 75grain VLD.

If so can you recommend some loads as a start point.

I have read that Varget is a good powder for the heavier bullets in .243 but I find Varget to be one of the dirtier powders and also one of the hottest giving higher barrel wear than some other powders.

Has anyone on here tried AA2520 with the .223 75 grain bullets.

Your coments would be very much appreciated.

I couldn't get AA2520 to shoot good groups. Its fast but also temp sensitive and you need good primer for consistent MV. (Heck, I was getting CRAZY high ES's w/ it, like 80fps and using good primers).

Yes Varget and RL-15 are dirty, but boy I can really get good groups with them. I'd go with one of those two to start.

75gr AMAX or 75gr Berger VLD would be my bullet choice.

From the bullet weight I would say you are speaking of a .223.
I never had much luck with my .223 T3, always about a 1 moa gun no matter how much I tweaked loads.

Still waiting to get it back from a new stock and rebarrel job. the best groups I could get were with 75gr Berger VLDs and RL-15 if I recall.

Might want to try 75gr HDY HPBT Match with 26.5gr(C*) of Ramshot Big Game.

Might also want to try a pressure pad (you can start with a temp one using folded matcbook cardboard) under the barrel out at the forward end of the barrel channel. The goal is to extablish a small degree of upward barrel flex when the action screws are tightened. Sometimes this can tame barrel harmonics that simply refuse to shoot smaller than 1MOA or larger.
