I like both, Glock21 and Springfield XD with a 5" barrel. In a way, they have similarities. Anyone with a real-world Springfield experience here? I am wondering about the pistol being user-friendly, like Glock. Ease of maintanence, parts availability, overall reliability, etc. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Please talk me out of .45 Springfield XD!

i have both glocks and xd's, there is certainly not as much redily available for the xd things are out there but way more choices for the glock. both are about the same as far as maintenance and cleaning. the xd points better for me, but i find i like the glocks lower bore axis. hope that helps.

Re: Please talk me out of .45 Springfield XD!

i carried a .45 XD Tactical 5" for over two years for CCW. I love em. Glocks just don't point right for me at all. I was really used to a 1911 when i tried out a friends XD. I stopped carrying 1911 and started using the XD. I still carry 1911 at times, but XD is in the holster most of the time.

Re: Please talk me out of .45 Springfield XD!

I have a XD40 service model. I like the way the XD feels in my hand better, its very easy to maintain, and there are a few companies making aftermarket parts for them but I have no experience with them. Mine has also been 100% reliable.

Don't believe the crap you read about roll pin failures with the XD. Both Glock and XD have failures, plain and simple. Theres an internet myth about all XD's having roll pin failures, not true. But if that really does bother you there are stronger aftermarket roll pins.

It really comes down to which one feels better to you IMO.

Re: Please talk me out of .45 Springfield XD!

Just to clear some things up. The early XDs had some locking block failures. S.A. Fixed it. Glocks have trigger and takedown lever spring failures. Plain and simple. No gun is maintenance free. Do some basic preventive maintenance and you'll be good. Even if there isn't much after-market for the XD, no big deal. You don't need most the crap anyways.

Re: Please talk me out of .45 Springfield XD!

I had a xd like you are looking at. Had a triger job done and put fiber optics on it. Gun shot great with no problems. Trouble was when I was at a match and the gun was shot by some one else to establish power factor the guy could not believe the recoil for the power factor. Sold it a bought a STI edge. I guess it depends on what you are going to do with it. Still a great gun but I like my edge better.

Sorry. I like my XD .45 Compacts but if you dry fire a lot you can definitely lose roll pins although a lot folks cause the failures by using the wrong punch size to disassemble. There are a few active threads on XDTALK now about it now. I've got about 8k through one and it's lost two pins so far. Using snap caps will definitely save the roll pins or you can buy some spares for a couple bucks as cheap insurance.

Roll pins aside, I agree it's a solid gun. I'm a 1911 guy buy I also use my XD and Glock as range training guns when I'm out rolling around in the dirt and rocks and the XD has been dead reliable despite being slightly abused.

I'm a member of XDTALK as well, I believe you and I frequent the same forums.

I don't dry fire very often so that may be why I haven't had that issue.

Re: Please talk me out of .45 Springfield XD!

I have an XDm .40, but I love it. I have to carry a glock for work and it has just never felt right to me. I don't want to have to do a ton of mods to a pistol for it to feel just ok in my hands. The XDm fit the moment I picked it up. I shot better groups off the bat then I ever did with my G19. Test fire both if you can and go from there.

By that I mean buy the XD.

Re: Please talk me out of .45 Springfield XD!

XDs are great guns. They are very easy to shoot well and have a phenominal trigger pull for a striker gun. Personally, I am a die hard sig sauer p226 fan and like hammer guns better because of the generally nicer trigger pull however was pleasantly surprised by the XD. Although, i would suggest that if youre going to spent the money get the XDm. its not that much more and you get the adjustable backstrap so that it will fit your hand perfectly and a match grade barrel which never hurts. I wish i could talk you out of the gun but there really arent many negative points.

Re: Please talk me out of .45 Springfield XD!

Well , you could allways go with a SA 1911 lol. The only thing I dont like about the XD is the trigger creep and reset. The Glocks trigger system can be safely tweaked to get a lighter pull and shorter reset.I dont know if the same aftermarket parts are out there yet for the XD I own a Glock 21 and have shot just under 1000 rnds or so through it no problems and the only thing I had to replace was the slide stop. Personally I'm a 1911 kind of guy.

Re: Please talk me out of .45 Springfield XD!

There is tons of aftermarket stuff for the XD, XDM pistols available at Springer Precision.

And I love my XDM 9mm. Had a smith put an oversize roll pin in the block, no more pin drift. Pimped out with alot of goodies, runs great and always has, even before the after market crap.

Tex, nice write-up and review. I've shot a number of XDs myself and haven't had any issues with them. I'm not a huge fan of the bore height, but that's because I shoot a 1911 and a Glock most often. That said, I think SA did a pretty good job in designing the XD. If I were to get one, I'd definitely go with an XDM though.

Thank you, sir. Outstanding work.

Re: Please talk me out of .45 Springfield XD!

I like my XD45 - I'm on my second one. I lost the first one to a buddy who had to have it more than I did... SO I just picked up it's replacement. I love the size, easy to get a full grip, functions well, eats .45ACP Shotshells (a must for me on my rattlesnake-infested deer lease) and all the ammo I feed through it...

I'm a die-hard 1911 fan, who has found a better platform for hi-cap .45ACP. I have owned and sold 2 G21 and the grip of the G21SF is still larger than the XD...

Re: Please talk me out of .45 Springfield XD!

I had one, and sold it.

It was utterly reliable and I did like it but I keep going back to the 1911 and the hi-power...

cant go wrong with an XD if your looking for a polymer double stack.

Re: Please talk me out of .45 Springfield XD!

Bought the XD9 a while back and really liked the way it fit my hand and angle was much preferred over the Glock. Just bought the XD(M)45 and love if for the same reasons along with the high capacity magazines loaded with Hornady Critical Defense loads. My 20 year old daughter picked it up for the first time a weekend ago before heading back to college and all her shots were within a tight fist sized hole! Now she wants to take it from me, HA. I'm sorry I can't talk you out of it 'cause love mine. Also, still love my Kimber 1911's...

Re: Please talk me out of .45 Springfield XD!

The XD has a mushy reset, parts ship from Crotia, the slide is heavier and felt recoil is worse as is hammers back and forth at both ends of the cycle, mags are less durable, the grip safety has to be depressed in order to rack the slide (real bitch for 1 handed malfunction clearances), the magazine release is stiffer, sights are almost impossible to replace yourself, and the LCI and striker status indicator are both achieved in the Glock design with fewer parts (position of the trigger, and ridge on the extractor).

Honestly though, either the M&P45 or the HK45 would BOTH be better options than either a G21SF or a XD45.

The HK45 might be the best polymer frame .45acp ever built. If you want to know more about how it came to be, check this out:

Agree 100%

Re: Please talk me out of .45 Springfield XD!

I have a XD.45 compact 4" barrel. I have never had a malfuction with it, the wifey has also sent some rounds down it. I also have a M&P.40 compact and I like the smallest back strap in it (my xd is 1 gen non interchangable). Since you are looking at the XDm then possibly that would be a non issue for you. Price for me was the reason I bought mine when compared to the Glock M&P Sig. Now I primarily carry the M&P because it fits my hand better.

Re: Please talk me out of .45 Springfield XD!

I have a XD45 Compact and love it. it has nearly 1k rounds through it with no issues. I have the powder river precision trigger job in mine and it is a huge improvememt over the stock trigger. nice light pull with a clean break and shorter, crisper reset. I agree with everyone that the XD seems to point more naturally for me compared to a glock.

Def not true at all.
