how much poi shift is possible from a cold barrel to a warm barrel.

i have a rifle i am having issues keeping sighted in. im wondering if its sighted in to a warm barrel not a cold. im on a hunt and cant just take the rifle out and find out for myself.

all rings are tight. it has uso rings and a nf nsx scope. im not saying its impossible that im just missing but it would be pretty hard for me to miss that bad at 300 yds

Re: poi shift

at 325 i shot a antolope in the back leg. it was standing broadside. i shot a 2 inch group at 350yds last week but that was after shooting for the day.

after the doe ran off a little ways she layed down. i stalked to 200yds and hit dead center where i was aiming.

im guessing my bullet hit 2.5-3 feet right. again its not impossible that i just plain missed but i just dont think i did. wind was no value 15mph.

its the first animal i ever wonded so that kind of sucks

Re: poi shift

no haven't shot it sence. it got dark and im going back out in the am with no chance to shoot. but my second shot was a bullseye (when the barrel was warm)

its a sick feeling to go hunting with a gun you loose confidence in.

Re: poi shift

What kid of barrel are you shooting? I had a problem with my factory Remington shifting poi about 1 and 1/2 inches It got worse when I started shooting with a suppressor and it really got the barrel hot. It takes about five rounds before I get it shooting where I zeroed. Needless to say I just purchased a new Krieger and the receiver is on its way to the gunsmith now for a make over.

Some times you get a lemon.

Re: poi shift

The POI wont change 3 feet... maybe at 1k sure but 300 yards that's not going to happen. Let me ask you this when you shoot paper does your heart start racing or are you able to keep your breathing and heart rate the same? When hunting adrenaline and other stuff will kick in. I would have to say on this one that is shooter error not the barrel.

Re: poi shift

You shouldn't have any problems with temperature changing your poi in that barrel. Is it your could bore shot that is actually different than the rest of your groups? Let me ask you about your antelope shot? what position were you in? Was that position the exact same as the one you used to sight your gun in? How was your breathing? Were you at all excited? Sometimes fundamentals are rushed during a hunt.

i hope so. i did all my pratice and groups prone with a rear bag. i shot today prone with no bag. im sure i didn't have as consistant cheekweld or hold as i do when i have plenty of time to set up. diffrent cheekweld can not cause this can it?

I'm sure it's a combination of different position, cheek weld, parallax, adrenalin dump, holding your breath, rushing the shot, and jerking the trigger.

Re: poi shift

A lot of the cold bore questions are answered in this thread. I'd have to say that if the shot missed by an estimated 8-12moa but holds groups that tight any other time, then it had absolutely nothing to do with the weapon. Like everyone else said, hit up the range for testing, but I don't buy into the cold bore theory, it's cold shooter.

Clean bore can have an effect, especially when still wet, and that's why most shooters will leave their bores fouled to have accurate first round hits but still nowhere near the distance of poi shift you experienced.

Re: poi shift

Shit happens you can't always blame it on the gun. You got the game didn't you? All that matters.

Re: poi shift

well i just got back from my hunt. @ 325yds with a 18 mph full value wind i shot a decent buck. hit less than a inch from where i intended.

long story short my shooting was way off yesterday. i guess wounding one happens to every hunter eventually but it is one sick feeling

Re: poi shift

It's part of hunting. You can't expect to hit every one of them to get an instant kill. It might not be the most humane thing, but at least you're using a big enough cal. to kill one. (but we wont get into that topic)
