On a recent afternoon, from a launchpad on the roof of the Chula Vista Police Department, they sent a drone across the city to a crowded parking lot where a young man was asleep in the front seat of a stolen car with drug paraphernalia on his lap.

When the man left the car, carrying a gun and a bag of heroin, a nearby police car had trouble following as he sprinted across the street and ducked behind a wall. But as he threw the gun into a dumpster and hid the bag of heroin, the drone, hovering above him, caught everything on camera. When he slipped through the back door of a strip mall, exited through the front door and ran down the sidewalk, it caught that, too.

But seriously if drones and tag readers aren’t a 4th violation, ALL gun laws are a 2nd violation. We should be able to have tanks/arty/warships/jets etc. “Civilians” owned warships and anything else a top tier military of the time had

I hate tell you, but they are in common use. Especially here in San Diego. Mostly by civilians, not police.

I see no issue with the police using them; they already use helicopters with FLIR pods. At least with drones, my tax dollars are more efficiently used, rather than fuel on a full blown huey (N170SD).

And for the record, we have a really good police force here. I've had a couple of run ins with SDPD, and they were always courteous, professional and respectful. I didnt always like the end results of those run ins, but there you go.

If I’m in my home being tracked by thermal cameras on a drone, I have no privacy.

I understand the value of the device. Like anything it needs to be carefully managed.

i remember stories about gunshot sensors being placed around the city to triangulate the sound of gunshots to locate them quickly.
if this happened after all these years, it would seem logical to tie that in to the drones.

While its good to use what's available to get useless punks such as this off the street, the risk of misuse and abuse seems so easy to have happen.

I dont think its a widespread problem of having rotten popo and for sure is an issue with some. And without going down that path too far, some departments seem to just let stuff slide too easy and dont can crappy officers.

Just has to have safeguards written into use policy, should be hard to use, probably requiring a warrant (not that it is impossible as we know to get one by lying), not just "drop of the hat" surveillance.
