I'm about to begin my next build. This will be my dedicated "hunting rifle" Something along the lines of a McMillan HTG, 24" Broughton sporter barrel .65 muzzle O.D.,I will use it on deer, elk, speed goats, etc. out to fairly long ranges. My question is which caliber. I have narrowed it down to 7mm-08, 6.5X55, 6.5X47. Recoil is important, please rate the recoil of each in this rifle. You know I love my 7WSM but I want a lighter kicker and a lighter rifle. Which would you pick and why, also any other suggestions. I'm not familiar with the two 6.5's thus my question. You guys here have forgot more about this shit than I will ever know and I value all opinions!!!
Thanks!

of the three, 7mm08 as there are more bullet choices for different types of game from varmint on up to medium game (although all three of them are a little lite for elk / bear, but will work), it has good ballistics, recoil is somewhere between a .243 and .308. if you get a brake on it maybe a .223

why not a .308?

Re: POLL, which caliber would you pick>

Any of the three will get the job done to pretty decent ranges. I think of those you mentioned it would be 6.5x47 for the least recoil, with the 6.5x55 and then the 7mm-08 coming in a bit higher.

I'm putting together a .260 at the moment, wouldn't count that round out.

Re: POLL, which caliber would you pick>

i have a 6.5x47 last year at 214 yards with 130 berger vld took a big mule deer. i like it because of low recoil, good muzzle velocity with low powder charges. if you can get the jlk bullets high bcs are available.

depends on the barrel manufacturer

7-08 for hunting....forget the idea of forgeting your ammo at home on a trip but if you loose it in the brush or run out the odds of somebody having extra or a store having some is a hell of a lot better than the other choices.

Plus I like the 7-08....."view my posts" if you want to find some info on the 7-08....a few days ago I gave all the links to info I have found on it.

Re: POLL, which caliber would you pick>

since you already have a 7mm I would go with the 7-08 and get a fast twist barrel. That way you can use your lighter hunting bullets on your 7wsm if you should ever choose to do so.
